Translate any text in any program instantly with Transmiti

Translate any text in any program instantly with Transmiti: "

Transmiti Screenshot2By now, most everyone is used to Google-translated pages when browsing a foreign language web page. However, what about foreign language phrases elsewhere in Windows, such as in PDF or DOC documents or other non-browser applications. (Or, for that matter, when Google translate for whatever reason fails to kick in, which is not an infrequent occurrence).

In these cases, Transmiti can help. This free, small program runs in the background and will deliver an instant Google translation of any text that the user highlights, anywhere in Windows, irrespective of where it happens to be; all it requires is a connection to the internet.

More notes:

  • How it works: highlight any text and press a hoteky; a little window will appear that displays the translated text (see screenshot above)
  • Hotkey: is the windows key by default. You can change this in the settings.
  • Copying translated text clipboard: is done automatically as the text is displayed on your screen.
  • From/to: the original language is autodetected by default, and the output language is determined in the settings
  • Resource usage: approx 12 megs in memory, which is very little.
  • Portable: download and run the exe.

The verdict: a lovely little Windows tweak that can come in quite handy. Very straightforward, but somehow has a lot of character (if programs were to have personalities, that is!).

I also like that it is so simple, sparse, and simply WORKS, and is not trying to sell you on any paid version (unlike another similar app that’s out there). Highly recommended.

[Thanks go to reader Panzer for letting me know about this one].

Version tested: 1.72

Compatibility: Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7

Go to the program home page to download the latest version (approx. 800K).
