We’ve mentioned a number of ‘history’ extensions for Chrome previously, but this one is my favorite. ‘Visual History for Chrome’ displays your URL history visually, as nodes of various sizes that are related to each other according to order that you have visited websites.
This is the kind of software that doesn’t need to be described too much; all you need to do is look at the screenshot, and you will get it at a single glance.
Sound Lock is a free app that can impose limits on the loudness of your PC’s audio. Loudness is different from ‘volume’, and what Sound Lock does is actually turn down the volume that might accompany sudden loud scenes or the transition to another media file, and will hike it up when the loud segment dies down, so you get a uniform level of loudness without unpredictable hikes.
Sound Lock is designed for situations such as late-night video watching when you might not want to bother those around you with sudden volume spikes; Sound Lock will prevent these from happening.
Here Are Some Cool Uses For ItConsidering A Personal Domain? Here Are Some Cool Uses For It:

Even if you’re not a fan of blogging and don’t have an amazing new website to launch, a personal domain can be an awesome tool to own for fun or self promotion: from a customized start page with your favourite services accessible in one click anywhere in the world, to a full on CV or résumé showcasing your talent.
Today I’ve gathered together tons of fantastic ideas for what to do with a personal domain.

Buying Your Domain
Of course, you know about .com domains, but did you know about .me ? The .me domain is technically the country-code top level domain (ccTLD) for Montenegro, but it’s found a niche for personal websites and can be purchased by anyone; GoDaddy is currently selling them for less than $10. This is the only cost for using many of the services I’ve listed below, though for some you will require your own hosting too, or a premium upgrade for use with a custom domain.

Host Your Own Website At Home
Using the free DynDNS service, you can point that domain to your public IP address; Justin wrote a ful guide on how to set up the router side of this; you’ll also need to install some kind of web server (typically a specialised linux distro) on a spare PC, a virtual machine, or as an application on your desktop.

Make Your Own Start Page
Most browsers now have the ability to show you a selection of your most visited websites, but for a more attractive and customizable start page consider a static and easily editable site such as Estacado or StartPage.rwt - both require no code knowledge, but must be hosted somewhere.

Virtual Business Card

Nancy covered quite a few virtual business card services before, but my favourite is Flavors.me for it’s sheer simplicity, though using your own custom domain does require a premium $20/year account.

If you have hosting, consider the simple but free Digital Business Card WordPress theme; you can also a run a full blog there, too.

Virtual CV or Résumé
One step up from a pithy little virtual business card, a full web CV will soon be commonplace as the world migrates it’s entire conciousness to an interconnected online entity. Stay ahead of the crowd so you needn’t be laughed at when you offer potential employers a paper copy.
Angela wrote about re.vu earlier this year, a visual résumé service that uses your LinkedIn profile to automatic generate the relevant graphics. The results are pretty stunning, and of course completely customizable.

Unfortunately, there’s no option to host on a custom domain, so for now your only recourse is to redirect your personal domain to re.vu. Visualize.me is a similar service, but not quite as slick in my opinion.

Your Own Customized Email Address
If you have control of the server where your domain is located (such as a MediaTemple Virtual Private Server), you can use the standard CPanel or Plesk to set up as many unique email addresses as you want – including a catch-all. Catch-all means that any emails sent to any address at the domain that aren’t specifically set up already will just be forwarded to the address you set. You could use this just like a GMail alias for spam protection, or perhaps for giving out personalized email addresses to contacts (“thecuteguyyoumetinthebarwascallled@jamesbruce.me, anyone?)

Google Apps
Even if you don’t have hosting, you can still install Google Apps – the free version allows up to ten users to have full access to all the Google Services you specify including Gmail. For more information on this, I recommend our free PDF guide to Google Apps.
Setting up Google Apps is quite a daunting process, but really not difficult. You simply need to edit the CNAME and MX records for your domain – found in the DNS Manager of wherever you purchased the domain. These are simply pointers that tell services communicating on your domain where to route things; web services, or email, being the most well known ones.

In the case of GoDaddy, enter the configuration screen for the domain, and click DNS Manager. Just click the quick add button for new entries, or edit existing ones. Follow the instructions careful, and be sure to wait 24 hours for changes to be live.
In fact, to just configure the MX records for GMail, you can use the GoDaddy GMail wizard here.

Custom URL “Shortener”
This may be a little pointless if you have a long name, but provided you also have some hosting setup with MySql and PHP capabilities, you are free to set up your own URL shortening service using YOURLS. Simon wrote a full guide to this before, so I’ll just point you there and be on my merry way.

Note that if you have Google Apps set up, you can install an app specifically for the task of URL shortening without needing any hosting.

Setup Your Own Web Proxy
School filtering systems getting you down? Tired of the dictatorship UK government blocking your PirateBays? Set up your own proxy, then laugh in their Orwellian faces as you float around untethered on internet waves of freedom.

Again, this will require your own hosting, and again, Simon has you covered: read his full tutorial here.
Do you think we missed something? What’s your favourite way to use a personal domain?
Whether you just graduated, are returning to school or are looking for a new job, within or outside your career, you need a resume. But not just a resume. You need a great resume. One which will stand out among the rest and help you land that job which you’re hoping will make some positive impact on your life.
My first tip of advice before you even start is to not get lost in the resume, but remember what you’re trying to accomplish. Not only does your resume reflect you, but it also attracts or repels certain kinds of employers. Obviously you want the good ones, and your resume can be that filter. That said, however, you always need to stand behind what is on your resume because ultimately you are what makes the difference in the interview and job.
Lastly, you might be thinking “Writing a resume has nothing to do with technology.” Au contraire. It has everything to do with technology… unless you write yours with a feather pen on animal hide.

The Most Important Part Of The Resume
What would you consider the most important part of a resume? Your education? Skillset? Experience? Vast knowledge in a specific area? In my opinion, all of those are great, but none of them are the most important aspect of your resume. The most important part of your resume is your contact information. Think about it.
If you were an employer looking through vast amounts, or even just a few resumes and you stumbled upon one that “wowed” you, but included no contact information, what would you think? What would you do? First off, a thought might occur that they aren’t attentive to details enough to even remember to include it. Second, you might not have the time or even care to try to find their contact information. Perhaps it was even in an email signature or something and you have it somewhere, but you are likely to not put much effort if they can’t even do that much.
Next, it’s important where it goes. As tempting as it may be, don’t place your contact information (or anything really) in the header or footer. The primary reason being that if you submit your resume online to a transposing database, the header and footer are likely to be missed in the scanning for key words and phases. This is because most just scan through the body of the resume.

A One Page Resume? Really?
There is a common thought out there that your resume shouldn’t extend one page, unless you are something special. And sadly, students in high school and universities are learning this still. I cannot count the times I was told this in school, even college. In fact, my last semester before I graduated I was applying for a job and asked an instructor for her input on my already stellar resume (I thought so, anyways). This was one of the things she told me to do – only make it one page. But when looking at my resume, that was clearly unrealistic. I had far too many valuable experiences to just cut them out, even if they all weren’t completely “relevant” to the job I was applying for – which I’ll cover later.
The answer to your question is “No. You don’t have to make it one page.” However, there are some guidelines to follow here:

Don’t add filler information, larger font or extra spaces just to make it two pages.

Don’t make the font too small and hard to read to make it fit to one or two pages.

It should be equal. If it’s two pages, make it a full two pages.

If it spills just over one page, tweak your resume until it fits.

Focus on content, not length. Once you have quality content, then make the size adjustments.

As you might see, they somewhat contradict each other in a way, but I think you should understand it. These are the tips that helped me. I can’t remember how or when I learned them. It was likely a combination or the Internet, school (very minimal) and personal experience through self-teaching.

Create A Clean, Easy-To-Follow Layout
In some ways, this goes right along with how many pages you have. You definitely want to customize the layout to the number of pages that you have. There are a couple aspects in having an easy-to-follow resume. First, you must have a nice template. You don’t want something busy or obnoxious. Something that makes it easy to find the information the interviewer is looking for. Another side, however, is less about the actual template and more about how you position your content.
Be consistent. I can’t emphasize this enough. If you do something one way in an area of your resume, do it that same way throughout the rest of it. If you change how something is positioned. If necessary, make that same change in all other areas of your resume. You want your resume to flow, not have your interviewer feel like they’re in a chaotic abyss of words when reading your resume.
As far as choosing a template goes, there are tons of them. If you’re using Word, Microsoft has several. The internet is full of ideas and there are even ways to use LinkedIn to create your resume for you. Although, I wouldn’t necessarily condone only using that as your main resume, but it’s a nice option. What I did was get an idea from a resume I saw and created one for myself, making custom tweaks here and there to my liking, while keeping the basic layout the same. It doesn’t matter what template you choose, as long as it meets the requirements of being easily read.

There are also a lot of ways to make your resume. From infographics to clever designs to videos. However, though these are very cool, I don’t personally feel they’re very practical… especially not for all careers across the board. Some careers strive for creative individuals that stand out from the rest – these are the kind of resumes that fit. All other careers simply should have pretty basic resumes. That doesn’t mean it has to be boring to read. Just like a story, you want the interview to feel engaged when reading it, to be impressed when they set it down… or better yet, not be able to set it down, but to continue to look through it.

Be Concise, But Thorough.

Content plays a huge role in whether your layout looks lean or not. You can have a great looking template, but not an easy to read resume. This is likely due to your content not being as clear and concise as it should be. Keeping things as short as possible is important. Let me put an asterisk by that though. You don’t want a vague resume. Meaning, you want to be thorough and avoid short, one to two word lines. It’s ok to have sentences and explain yourself in your resume. This was something I learned by myself as well.
In high school, I felt as if they pushed your resume to summarize your professional life. And to an extent you want it to, but not too much to the point that you have dwindled down every skill and experience. In fact, many of the cliched phrases and sayings for resumes are derived from this very principle of “minimalism.” Again, you want to be concise, and certainly not redundant, but you need to make sure that you are also explaining who you are, what you’ve done,and maybe even why you have done it.

Impress, But Be Honest

Obviously you want your resume to stand out from the rest. You’ve gone to great measures choosing a killer template, creating excellent content… oh, content. About that. Reread everything you’ve got on your resume. How much of that have you literally accomplished? Have you specified your extent of knowledge in that skill or experience? Let’s say you have “Managed a team to create… blah blah blah.” Did you really manage the team? Or did you just observe them? Perhaps you did help manage the team, but in that phrase, it sounds like you were the sole manager. Were there others of equal stature whom you worked with to manage the team? These are important things to include. I have found myself being a little overzealous when writing/editing my resume and often need to step back and look at things a little bit more realistically.
In the image blow you can see I chose the word “assisted.” There are a lot more powerful words that sound better, but essentially that is all I did and it wouldn’t be right to set a bar higher than what my skill level depicts. Also, the majority of the time, being honest will impress.

Forget References

Ok, so don’t literally forget them. But don’t add them, not mention anything referring to them on your resume. For a long time I added “references available” in the footer. Then I read how that is not really necessary since employers assume that you will have references, especially if you’re “sharp” – which your resume will often indicate. Employers typically will ask for references later.
However, depending on the situation, they do sometimes ask for references at the same time of the resume (or sometimes, you just know they’re going to want them right away). In these situations, I do include three references which are the most relevant to the job I’m applying for. I have a separate resume created with my references already in it so all I need to do is swap out any references, if I so desire, change their contact information and send it away.
That is an exception though. For the general resume that you might hand out and certainly for any public resume of yours which you post to the internet, leave out the references. If the employers like what they see, they’ll contact you for more. It also gives them a reason to contact you for more, and indirectly tells you they’re interested. The more contact you have with them the better so you don’t want to give them everything they want right away, unless of course they directly ask for it.

Grammar, Grammar, Grammar
Grammar. I can’t emphasize it enough. I’ve said it four times and I still don’t feel that you quite understand what I’m getting at. Alright, so I’ll assume that you do. Honestly though, this is one of the most important aspects of your resume. I’d almost say it’s right below remembering to add and having proper placement of contact information. If you don’t have an outstanding skillset expressed on your resume, but have flawless grammar, you’re already above average. It doesn’t just show that you know how to make a resume, but that you pay attention to detail. Detail that also will be expected on the job, no matter what you do. If you have trouble with this, don’t just do it on your resume, practice it in every day life so that when you do get a job, you don’t disappoint.
As you can see, even I mess up grammar occasionally. Although it doesn’t happen often.

One Resume Doesn’t Fit All
I’ve already mentioned this briefly when referring to having multiple resumes, one with and one without references. However, it doesn’t stop there. I highly recommend you tweak your resume per job. Slightly adjust your objective to match what you are expecting from that job and what they are looking for. Add any skills that you have that may be more relevant to the job. Just adjust the overall focus of your resume to that company. It should also relate to the cover letter you write to them and include many of the same things.
Since graduating, I’ve applied at several places which are very different. Not all of the places were paying, some volunteer, like zoos, but many still requested a resume. From an avian sanctuary to two zoos to several vet clinics, my resume had a lot of tweaks. Had I not created multiple versions, I would have been in a mess and would have been constantly changing and editing what I wanted that particular organization to see.

Instead of having to make the whole thing again, I recommend saving it as another version, opening that version and making the changes, then saving it again. That way you don’t overwrite your other versions of resumes. I also recommend having PDF and DOC versions of your resume. Personally, I prefer sending a PDF version versus a DOC version. Most of the time that is what employers want anyways.

Manage Your Resumes
After creating resume after resume, you will soon realize that they need to be managed some how. If you’re somewhat unfamiliar with file management in general, I encourage you to read my article about that. In that article I talk about naming your files according to what is included in them and also dating them. This is especially important with resumes. It’s nice to know what resume is for what job. For instance, I have a resume for a vet assistant position, a zoo keeper position and for working at an avian sanctuary. Plus, I have my general resume. It would be impossible to keep all of these straight it they didn’t have a proper description.
Along with describing, dating the file name is also important. Not just when you initially created it, but as you update it, change the name to when you last updated it. For me, I just go by month and don’t really need to get more specific than that. This has proven very helpful because I might have forgotten about adding something recent to my resume, but will be reminded when I see it hasn’t been updated for two months.
Lastly, put all your resumes in one folder. If you want to access these from other places, online cloud backup and sync applications like SugarSync and Dropbox are excellent solutions. It also is in your benefit to use such programs since they have file versioning and live updating to automatically detect and save any changes you make.

Tell A Story

Remember that your resume is basically a timeline of your professional life. At first it may seem bleak, especially if you don’t have much professional experience. But be creative. Share about what life experiences you’ve gone through. Have you done Eagle Scouts? What about volunteer work, specifically in your area of interest? What extra curricular activities did you do in school? What skills have you taught yourself through your interests in a particular career? These are all things that you can include and should include on your resume. There are so many more things as well, but hopefully those questions will trigger some ideas for you to compound on and work with.

Conclusion – It’s Only The Beginning
So you’ve finished your resume. Congrats! Now I’m going to tell you that your resume is an ever growing, ever changing, live document. It will never be finished. For now, you are content with it. But soon you will think of something else to add or do something else that should be put on there. This is fine and you shouldn’t get discouraged about the never ending resume work. In fact, be proud that yours doesn’t sit around outdated.
Your resume is just the first part of your presentation. Like I said in the beginning, you are what makes a difference. Be sure that you can back up everything on your resume, and if in doubt, allow a little leeway to go beyond what you wrote in your resume. If you don’t agree with something here, I am more than willing to hear your argument and embrace different viewpoints.
Have you developed a resume based off these guidelines already? How has this article helped you in creating your newly refined resume? If you haven’t created a resume yet, are there any additional questions I can help with?
In the course of my blogging career, I have always been respectful of the people who have made the effort to upload their work of photographic art on the web. Open licensed for free use or even otherwise, it always falls upon us to credit the photographer for his work. Failure to do so is less of bad etiquette and more of outright stealing. I sure know the feeling because I hate it when someone lifts my written posts and copy-pastes it without permission.
When it comes to textual works, we have seen how easy it is to catch the copycats. But what about pictures and photographs? Is image search that easy? Probably not; but that’s not to say it is impossible because image search technologies have evolved.
Making an effort to defeat image plagiarism is this simple Firefox extension called Who Stole My Pictures.

A Simple Firefox Add-on
Who Stole My Pictures is a Firefox add-on that basically works like a reverse image search. Reverse image search is a just a different take on your traditional keyword based search. Here instead of using a keyword, you use an image instead. Specialized search engines are used which use their algorithm to find similar images. Who Stole My Pictures (WSMP) can be thought of as a meta-reverse image search engine as it uses dedicated reverse search engines like Yandex.ru, Tineye.com, Google.com, Baidu.com and Cydral.com. Each has its own way of finding out images using the reverse search.
WSMP is really a very simple no-frills add-on in itself. It works from the right-click menu after you install it as you would any other Firefox add-on.
You simply right-click on the specific image and then choose the search engine you want to use. You can also click on Open all in tabs and get them all to work for you together.

Results will be displayed in separate tabs for each search engine. It will obviously also depend on the downtime state of the browser. E.g. I found Baidu consistently down for me. Google and TinEye gave the most reliable results.

If you have a particular preference, you can go into the Options and select the search engine you want to display in the right-click menu. Remember, the checked out search engine will play no further part in the image search.

The final option – Upload Local Image to Tineye.com – does exactly as it says. You can upload an image from your desktop and use Tineye.com (probably the most well-known reverse image search engine) to find similar images.

5 Uses of a Reverse Image Search Engine Apart From A Plagiarism Check
It is a small world and sooner or later you fill bump into the copyright infringer. But a reverse image search like WSMP has a few other uses you can put it to.

Find out a higher resolution version of the same image.

Find out if it’s too common an image, and you could do better with a bit of exclusivity.

Find out in what other context the same image has been used. For instance, I have often discovered a few more cool websites using reverse image search.

Find out the source of image. Who knows…it could be a valuable stock of other images you can use.

Find out the photographer behind a particular picture, and check out his other works.

Who Stole My Pictures may be a simple extension. But as you can see from the five other uses above, the benefits are many if you can find the right use for it. Do you have your own requirements for a reverse image search? Do you think reverse image search or image search alone has really evolved, or is there still lots to be done? Shout out in the comments.
Even if you’re not overly geeky, you probably have a rough idea of how much memory and what sort of processor your computer has. But what about its other statistics? For example, do you know your RAM bus speed? This may sound esoteric, but if you’re thinking of upgrading your RAM, it’s something you really need to know. Then again, if you are a serious geek, you may be in need of a tool you can tote around on a USB stick for diagnosing hardware on friends’ and colleagues’ machines.
CPU-Z is a free and powerful hardware detection tool that can do just that, and it’s available as a portable version, too. In fact, it’s so good, we featured it on our Best Portable Apps list.

Downloading The Portable Version
Sometimes you have to get an application’s portable version from an unofficial source. With CPU-Z, this is not so: The portable version is available right on the CPU-Z Download page:

Once you grab the ZIP file for the language and Windows version you want, it’s just a matter of unpacking it somewhere, and running the CPU-Z executable. It will ask you for Administrator privileges to run, though.

Using CPU-Z

Being a classic utility, CPU-Z’s interface is, well, utilitarian. After running through a quick startup sequence where it diagnoses all of your hardware, you will get a series of tabs showing main system aspects. The CPU tab, shown above, shows far more than just the name of the CPU (yes, I’m writing this on an ancient laptop). You can also see the CPU’s package (or socket), which can be handy for upgrading it.
The mainboard tab is equally interesting:

You can see your BIOS version and revision date, which is, again, excellent for figuring out if there’s an available upgrade from the BIOS maker without having to shut down your computer and write down the BIOS information on a piece of paper. The same goes for the motherboard, especially if you have a desktop computer: I have a Gigabyte motherboard on my desktop, and have had to install updated drivers for it several times to resolve various issues. Knowing the exact make and model of the motherboard makes it easy to find up-to-date drivers.
The memory and SPD tabs both shows information regarding your system’s RAM, with the SPD tab the more interesting of the two:

What’s great about this tab is that it lets you see memory sizes on a per-slot basis. For example, I remembered that once upon a time I upgraded this laptop’s RAM – but I wasn’t really sure how I went about it. Now I know that I have a 2GB DIMM module in one slot, and a 512MB DIMM in the other. That’s handy, because now I know that the only practical upgrade for this machine would be getting another 1GB or 2GB stick, but it must be a single stick (not that I’m ever going to upgrade this old Toshiba workhorse, but still, it’s nice to know).
The SPD tab also lists each DIMM’s max bandwidth, so now I know that my 512MB DIMM is slowing everything down because it’s 333MHz, while my 2GB one is capable of 400MHz. Not a huge difference, but still, it’s good to know that the smaller DIMM is also making things slower. Also, if your RAM is giving you trouble, you can see its serial number and manufacturing date (week and year), as well as its maker. This is great for figuring out whether or not it’s still under warranty.

Run This On a New Computer
One case where CPU-Z will be really invaluable is right when you get a new computer. Mistakes (real or otherwise) have been known to happen, where people order one specification and get a somewhat different (lower-quality) system from the store or maker. So when you get a new computer, you can just run CPU-Z portable on it and quickly see exactly what you got, to make sure it is indeed what you paid for.
All in all, CPU-Z doesn’t have many frills, but packs a ton of useful information into a compact, sensible interface. Naturally, there’s also a Windows installer if you choose to use it instead of the portable version. Definitely recommended.
Have you investigated the contents of your computer? How did you go about finding out the specifications of your computer’s components?
This article is a follow up to my “25 free online courses for learning iPhone and iPad programming” post, for those who are interested in developing for Android. These online are in many cases the Android counterpart to the courses listed in the iOS post above.
What these courses have in common, aside from the focus on Android development, is that they are all 100% free. You should be able to get yourself started off on developing your first app, and those who have some development experience will find advanced topics covered as well.
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a security method that requires two different ways of proving your identity. It is commonly used in everyday life. For example paying with a credit card not only requires the card, but also a PIN, a signature, or an ID. With 1FA becoming increasingly unreliable as a security measure, two-factor authentication is rapidly gaining importance for logging into online accounts.
Per default, almost all online accounts use password authentication, i.e. a one-factor authentication method. The problem with passwords is that they are easily hacked. A further problem is that many users still use one and the same password for all their accounts. While being a bit of a hassle, 2FA significantly increases security by asking for an additional authentication factor, thus making it much harder to hack an account.

What Exactly Is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
As mentioned in the introduction, 2FA is a login method. The two authentication factors can be one of the following:

Something you know, typically a password or the answer to a security question

Something you have, for example a security code sent to your mobile or an ATM card

Something you are, i.e. biometric data such as your fingerprints

Everyday examples where 2FA is employed are drawing money from the ATM (card + PIN), paying with a credit card (card + signature OR card + PIN OR card + security code), or entering a foreign country (passport + biometric data).

Why You Should Use It
Imagine someone hacked into your email account. What kind of information would they gain access to?
Here is an idea: user names of other accounts, passwords to other accounts, alternative email addresses, personal data, personal photos, scanned documents, information about your friends, family, and other contacts, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, insurance numbers, anything else?
Would this information potentially help them to hack into some of your other accounts, for example Facebook? And at how many places have you logged in using your Facebook or another social media account?

When you think about it, you will find that most of your online accounts are interlinked. Hacking one of them probably gives a smart person access to several other of your accounts. In other words, if someone manages to hack into one of your key accounts, your identity has practically been stolen and the potential consequences are madness.

Where You Should Use It
Ideally, you should use 2FA for all accounts where you store any type of personal information, as well as accounts that have payment information linked to them. This includes, but is not limited to:

email account/s

Facebook and similar social media accounts

online banking

online payment accounts

online shopping accounts

any type of cloud storage service

online gaming accounts

Unfortunately, not all online accounts or services offer 2FA or are clear about it. Often, it’s a matter of poking around their website to find additional security options.

Two key online services that do offer 2FA and for which you should definitely enable it are Facebook (login approvals) and Google (2-step verification). You can read more about their respective 2FA features here:

Facebook Login Approvals

Google 2-step verification

Conclusion
2FA is an indispensable security measure for your key online accounts, such as email, banking, or social networking. While two-factor authentication doesn’t mean your accounts are immune to attacks, it does make your accounts more resilient as a hacker needs to crack more than a simple password. Whether or not a second authentication factor is worth the hassle depends on the account and what type of information is stored in it.
Where are you using two-factor authentication and do you think it’s worth the hassle?
[Android]Flick Note: Jot Down Notes With Speed And Ease! [Android]:
As a writer, I need to be taking notes on a 24/7 basis. Notes just make it so easy to track my errands, duties, and obligations. If it weren’t for all the notes that I jot down, there would be an entire void of forgotten thoughts and lost ideas. How many thoughts have you lost because you couldn’t jot them down?
Note-taking apps on mobile devices are extremely helpful, especially in our age of fast information flow. Students can take notes from class and record their homework assignments. Employees can keep track of their tasks for the day. Designers can compile all of their design ideas. Grocery lists. Appointments. Future events.
Ever since I started using Android, Catch Notes has been my go-to app for taking notes. It has all the features that I need and a clean interface. But recently I stumbled upon Flick Note, a notes app from Teragadgets. Being a sucker for trying out new apps, I decided to give it a whirl and was pleasantly surprised.

The interface for Flick Note is about what you’d expect from a notes app. When you open the program, you’re faced with a list of all the notes you have. The app generously starts you off with a note that describes how to use Flick Note to its fullest; in essence, it’s a README. Thankfully, it’s more helpful than most README files I’ve read.
What I like about Flick Note is that the first line of the note acts as the title–and Flick Note designates that by emboldening it. It’s a simple display choice, but I love it. The little details are what makes an app shine.
By swiping left and right, up and down, you can read different notes, create tags, filter by tags, change reading modes, and more. Not exactly the most intuitive way to navigate, but it’s super quick once you learn it.

Flick Note comes packed with standard features for a notes app, as well as a couple that are new. If you have a particular note that you think would be useful to share with others, you can through email, text message, Bluetooth, and more (these all require Internet or 3G/4G connections). But if you want to move the contents of a note to another app, you can do that, too.
One cool perk (though not entirely groundbreaking) is the Notes Info popup, which shows you a running count of the number of words and characters in the current note. For a writer, this would come in handy.
Flick Note has a lot of tablet features that I can’t enjoy because I’m running it on a smartphone. On a tablet, you can open multiple notes using a split-pane view that’s easily navigated using swiping gestures. With MultiMarkdown, you can instantly convert a note into HTML as you type.

When you rely on a single notes app for cataloging all of your words, you will eventually run into the problem of finding the right note that you’re looking for. For most, this issue is as easily solved as sorting. Flick Note doesn’t offer much in that area.
However, you can search through your notes database in two other ways: by tag and by word. Each note can be tagged with one or multiple tags, which can then be used as an organizer. You can also find all notes that contain a particular word or phrase using the “Search Notes” option.

The best feature of Flick Note is that it syncs directly with SimpleNote, a free online notes repository that is tied on an account basis. SimpleNote was the primary notes web app that I used before I found Catch Notes. If I’d known about Flick Note back then, I may not have switched.

And lastly, Flick Note provides a lot of room for customization and change. How often do you want to keep your notes synced with your online account? Do you like adjusting fonts/colors/sizes to fit your personal preference? How about disabling/enabling certain aspects of the app that you just don’t ever use? You can do it all here.
Flick Note comes in two varieties: Free and Pro. The Pro version, called Flick Notes Key, will set you back $5 on Google Play and unlock the following features: widgets, to-do list style notes, and the removal of all ads. The Pro version is not a separate app; you are simply purchasing a key that unleashes the full potential of Flick Note.
In the end, Flick Note is a lighter and more streamlined version of Catch Notes. It feels smoother in certain areas but at the cost of having a smaller set of features. For SimpleNote users, Flick Note is the best Android app you’ll find (at least at the time of writing this review). If you don’t use SimpleNote, Flick Note is still worth a try.
So, you have an expensive graphics card that’s 3D vision compatible,
along with a beautiful 3D monitor. You watch the very few 3D videos
NVIDIA has on their site playable through the NVIDIA 3D vision
video player and start to slowly grow bored. You then browse the web
and come across some big titles that are available for download in .mkv
format. Bingo! After the download finishes, you open your NVIDIA 3D
vision video player and browse for the downloaded movie, click
okay and realize you’re really upset. “This file format is not
supported!”

No worries! I’m here to show you exactly what to do to play ANY unsupported file format without having to use the NVIDIA 3D vision
video player. Before I go into any detail, I’m going to attach the
links to three different applications that you will need in order to get
things working.
Stereoscopic Player
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 7.2.0
There will be a section towards the end of the install asking you to
include audio codecs, make sure you enable all of them. If not the 3D
video will work but the audio will not.
Haali Media Splitter
I read a few articles that says all you need is the Haali Media
Splitter, but that is not true, you also need the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack
7.2.0.
*Note Download and install in the order above.

After installing the three applications above you will need to do
three more steps. Open the Stereoscopic player, then under File go to
Layout and choose Sensio. After that is selected go to View then Viewing
Method and choose NVIDIA 3D Vision.
Next go to View and go to Preferred Viewing Method and choose
Stereoscopic. Browse for your download 3D .mkv file and then full screen
the video. You should now be able to take advantage of the 3D
experience! Take a look at the screen shots below.
USB flash drives are a security concern for many not just because they can carry harmful viruses, but because it is very easy for someone to quickly and discreetly slip a Flash drive in a USB port and transfer data illegitimately from a PC.
Disabling the USB ports completely is one thing, but doing that can limit the functionality of your connected devices. A better option is to use “USB Disk Access Manager”, a very simple FREE tool that lets you do three things; ‘Allow Read & Write’, ‘Allow Read Only’, and ‘Disable USB Disks Detection’ altogether.
(more…)
Craigslist has become the go-to site for anyone looking to buy, sell, hire, be hired, etc. However, at the same time, it has the reputation of attracting “sketchy” people. We often think these people wouldn’t even have the know-how to use Craigslist, but the fact is that almost everyone can… my dad can. And if he can, you most certainly, undoubtedly can. And that means that even the weird, sketchy people can.
But this article isn’t just about using Craigslist. It’s about getting the best results, and that can be hard no matter how savvy you are. However, I have had quite a bit of success in a number of areas, which I attribute to a number of things that I have done.

Be Open (Opposite Of Being Sketchy)
So people say that people on Craigslist are sketchy — use this to your advantage. I recently met with a pet sitting client from Craigslist and she told me that she chose me because I was upfront, honest and open. First and foremost, make sure you have as much detail as possible in your ad. Not something like “Selling car. Email me.” and then not have a name, number or picture of the car and only have the email that Craigslist provides users to click on to email you. I’m guessing that even if I email someone like this, I won’t get a response. How do I know this? Because I use Craigslist a lot and respond to a lot of ads for various things. Most of the time if the person just includes their name, they’ll respond. This can’t always be guaranteed, but it’s pretty common.
Oh, and don’t use all caps, cram everything together or use excessive exclamation marks like this guy. This guy is likely to be legitimate, but he looks “spammy” due to how his ad is written.

Here’s an example of one of my ads.

So, be sure to include all the specific information in your ad. It’s also important to provide as much information about yourself that you are willing to tell. Obviously be logical and reasonable here. I typically display my name, phone number, email, Twitter handle and personal website. This shows the viewer, that you have a reputation to uphold and aren’t going to scam them. It also shows them what you look like by showing a public photo, such as one on Twitter or a personal website. I wouldn’t recommend putting your photo in the ad itself however, as that seems a little too personal. By still having it available, it makes people who want to work a little harder, find more information about you. In some ways, it weeds out a lot of worthless contacts — people who realize you’re serious about this and don’t want to bother with you (for one reason or another, don’t ask me why they’re like this).
A quick note about providing your phone number: Some people just use their home or cell phone. I’m not that brave. Instead, I use my Google Voice number. That way, if for some reason it gets abused, I can easily block them. It also just makes it easier with voice to text voicemail transcripts, set email alerts of a voicemail or missed calls, and call free from my computer. If I’m going to call them back with that number anyways, I might as well not complicate things by calling with a different number than what I listed in the ad.

Embed Contact Info And Ditch Craigslist Email To Cut Down On Spam
Along with being open, there’s another thing that I recommend and that is to embed your contact info as an image in Craigslist. I’m not talking about uploading it as an image, that’s completely separate. First let me tell you why, then I’ll explain how.
I actually cannot claim this as my own idea, long ago I read about doing it somewhere, but I can’t remember where. I was getting ridiculous spam-ish replies to my Craigslist ads. I don’t know how or why it happens, and I don’t care. I just know it’s annoying and I wanted it to end. I have had great luck with embedding my info as an image instead of typing it into the ad itself or allowing a user to click the email. I imagine that it may be a tad annoying for the viewers of my ads having to manually type in my email address, perish the thought, but like I said previously, it weeds out the people who really don’t want to put forth enough effort… and why would you want to work in any capacity with those people anyways?

To go about doing this, type the text you want in a text editor of some sort. I use Microsoft Office or LibreOffce, but you can use whatever works best for you. Type it in a larger font, but try to make it look good too. Save that on your computer for the future. Then take a screenshot and paste it into an image editor, such as Paint.NET. Crop only the part around the text and try to make the dimensions as even as possible. If you don’t like what you have, you can always take another screenshot. Save the image that you just cropped to the same folder that you saved the doc with your info. Now go to a service like Photobucket or Imgur, create an account if you need to, and then upload the file. Copy the image’s HTML code and paste it into your Craigslist ad. If you have Craigslist Helper (mentioned below) enabled, make sure you click “Plain Text” first before pasting the code.

Use Craigslist Helper — You’ll Be Amazed
This has actually been covered already by Ryan here on MakeUseOf, where he walks through the setup and all of its features, but I wanted to reemphasize its importance again. Craigslist Helper has transformed the way I use Craigslist. Nonetheless, it’s best if you find it out for yourself and read Ryan’s article.
In the image below, the red square highlights the link to hover over displaying the entire ad without clicking on it. There are a plethora of features such as icons which display whether a phone number was mentioned (hovering over it displays the number), whether a location was given, and a feature for easily re-posting ads.

Note: For some reason, Craigslist Helper was removed from the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-on page. I managed to find a version, which has also fixed a couple bugs that was in the previous version. Also note that this extension is not supported or being developed any more by the original developer, but by another one who thankfully took over this excellent extension.

Be Consistent and Persistent — It’s The Key
If you’ve ever done sales, you’ll recognize the words “numbers game.” That’s exactly how Craigslist works. When posting or replying to an ad, you may or may not get replies. These are the numbers I’m referring to. The key is to keep responding to ads that you’re interested in and to keep posting your own ads. A few personal examples of mine are ads about freelance work: computer repair, pet sitting and miscellaneous work like strenuous lifting, moving, etc. Other ads that I post are to sell things or looking for things. Once I posted an ad about needing an iPod cable. A lady responded and said she had a number of them and would just give one to me for free. When I was in the area, I stopped by and saved myself thirty-some dollars instead of buying a brand new one.
The thing is, Craigslist can be used for anything. Anything — I found my lost dog because of it! But it’s only useful if you keep your ads up to date and on the top of lists and continue to reply to ads that interest you.

Respond To Ads Professionally

Take a look at the image above. There are two important things to note: a clear, but concise subject line, which shows that you actually took the time to change the predetermined Craigslist subject line, and an email that is easy to read, free of grammar errors and invites a reply. I would recommend even including a phone number if they care to call you instead.
This especially applies when looking for jobs on Craigslist. I recently just landed a great job at a vet clinic in town because I contacted them through their ad on Craigslist. They were certainly the sharpest one, and the only clinic that responded to me. This goes for both the employer and the employee — answer your replies. Even if the car is sold, the position is filled or the iPod cable is no longer needed, answer the replies. It’s just common courtesy and nothing technical about it. Take the time to say “Actually, I just sold the car. Sorry about that. Thanks for your interest.” It takes two seconds and it doesn’t leave the person who actually made the effort to contact you (out of all the people who didn’t — remember about the numbers game), confused about the status of your ad.
That leads me to another suggestion, remove your ads if they are no longer needed. Again, it’s common courtesy. This also reflects on you. Although you may not be all that well known on Craigslist, especially in big cities. It is possible for someone to stumble on one or more of your ads, or for you to contact someone who you’ve worked with before — it’s a small world, these things happen. What’s my point? That you have a reputation to uphold. If someone had a bad experience with you previously, they’re likely not going to do business with you again. I would consider not replying to a response on an ad or any of those things that I mentioned a “bad experience.” Also, they likely will be able to identify you if you stand out in the other ways by doing the things I’ve mentioned
Back to responding to ads, whether you’re contacting the ad-holder by voice call, texting or email, be sure to spell correctly, speak clearly and to be aware of what your email signature says. It’s important to let them know exactly why you’re contacting them. For instance, in the subject line of the email, inform them of what you’re interested in. I’ve found that if you edit the subject line instead of leaving it at the default entry which is added when clicking on the Craigslist email addresses, it shows the person you’re emailing that you are a real person and interested in what they have to offer.
Craigslist is basically a selling medium. Whether you’re buying or selling, you’re trying to sell. How are you trying to sell when you buy? Well, have you ever negotiated a price with a seller who already has a quote from someone else? If you have, then you’re selling yourself as the right buyer. What about looking for a job… that’s obvious, you want to sell yourself as the best candidate.

Ask For A Specific Subject Line In Email Replies
As I mentioned previously, I recommend that you ditch the preset Craigslist email and add your own in an image embedded in the Craigslist ad. However, this poses one issue: the subject line. If you don’t note in the ad that you’d like a specific phrase in the subject line, you’re bound to get all sorts of things. This makes sorting out emails hard. To prevent this, simply say “Please respond with ‘Interested in car’ in the subject line to ensure I see and respond to your email,” or something along those lines.

Conclusion
I have found these things very helpful for me and have created a very accurate and good system out of it. In some ways, these narrow down the responses because people don’t want to try a little harder, but again, those people are likely to leave you hanging or not even showing up to meet you. That is not only frustrating, but a waste of time. Why not nip that in the bud from the very beginning? These tips can help do that.
Do you have any Craigslist tips that you’ve found rather helpful in changing your experience? We’d love to hear about them!
Fancy some computer-related tutorials? You can find plenty on a variety of topics from awesome apps to programming languages on Youtube, but what about other non-technological activities that you might complete every week? We have featured plenty of Youtube channels and videos that will teach you how to speak a specific language, cook, do your makeup, become more acquainted with engineering/Mathematics concepts, learn magic tricks and more. Here I will be taking a look at a few hobbies you can pick up from Youtube that can actually save you money, which, let’s be honest, can be handy considering how some economies are (or have been) plunging lately.

Jewelry-Making
If you’re the creative type, why not channel that creativity into making things you can wear? There are many wonderful channels on Youtube dedicated to crafty things like jewelry-making. You can create them for yourself or as gifts! Youtubers have jewelry-making pretty well-covered with many thorough tutorials. Here are some starting points for you to explore jewelry-making:

how to tie basic knots,

how to make resin charms for kiddie bracelets or keychains,

how to make earrings,

how to make your own beads for necklaces or bracelets from polymer clay canes (which is shown in the next video), and more.

There are many more tutorials on Youtube from which you can draw a lot of inspiration. Plus, another neat thing about jewelry-making is that craft stores (and even chain super centers) will likely have lots of materials for you to work with, whether those are additional charms, jewelry wire, etc.

Sewing
Like jewelry-making, sewing is another activity where you can thoroughly use your creativity to create unique pieces. It’s also a pretty popular hobby on Youtube as there is a multitude of video tutorials. To start, you could learn:

how to sew by hand (and by machine),

the different types of stitches,

how to make a laptop sleeve,

making a handbag,

sewing a dress,

creating a quilt, and more.

This hobby isn’t just money-saving, but also potentially a lucrative hobby as there are many sellers on Etsy, the handmade marketplace, that have incredibly cute and unique laptop sleeve designs, backpacks, etc.
Here is one of my favorite videos on sewing, where the author makes a cute ruffle tunic:

Cocktails/Drinks
Drinks are expensive but addictive nonetheless, so if you feel guilty for having too many of those sweet coffee drinks, maybe making them yourself will be a bit more guilt-free. You will know what ingredients went into that drink and you can control the amounts of substances used in your drink.
Fancy an adult beverage? Here a few popular cocktails you can learn to make yourself thanks to Youtube:

Cosmopolitan,

Bloody Mary,

Mint mojito,

Chocolate martini, etc.

As for some coffee drinks, there are some Youtubers that have revealed how to make some of the following:

Java chip frappuccino,

Firefox’s interface is completely customizable, including its orange Firefox menu button. You can change its name or color to anything you want – you can even set a custom background image or add your own logo. After you’ve tweaked the look of the button itself, you can easily customize the options that appear when you click the Firefox menu button.
To make most of these changes, we’ll be editing Firefox’s userChrome.css file – by modifying this file, we can change the appearance and functionality of Firefox’s interface. The userChrome.css file is located in your Firefox profile folder – if this file doesn’t exist, you’ll have to create it.

Creating Your userChrome.css File
To open your Firefox profile folder, click the Firefox orange menu button, point to Help, and select Troubleshooting Information. Scroll down and click the Show Folder button on the page that opens.

Inside the Firefox profile folder that appears, double-click the chrome folder, and then double-click the userChrome.css file inside it to edit it with Notepad. You can also edit it with any other text editor you prefer, like Notepad++.
If you don’t see the chrome folder or the userChrome.css file, you’ll need to create them. Right-click in the Firefox profile folder that appeared after you clicked the button, point to New, select Folder, and name it chrome. Open the chrome folder and create a new text file in the same way, naming it userChrome.css (replace the .txt file extension with .css). If you don’t see the .txt file extension, you’ll have to tell Windows to not hide file extensions.

Customizing the Button’s Appearance
Copy and paste the following code into your userChrome.css file to get started:

@namespace url(“http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul”);

#appmenu-button {

background: #orange !important;

}

#appmenu-button dropmarker:before {

content: “Firefox” !important;

color: #FFFFFF !important;

}

#appmenu-button .button-text {

display: none !important;
If you already have some text in your userChrome.css file, omit the first line (the one that begins with @namespace) and copy the other lines of text to the bottom of the file.
Each line here is pre-filled with the default settings, but you can change each setting.

To change the button’s background color: Change the #orange after background: to another color. For example, to use a dark blue, replace #orange with #0404B4.

To change the button’s text: Replace “Firefox” with your desired name. For example, you could enter “MakeUseOf”.

To change the button’s text color: Replace the #FFFFFF after color: with your desired color. The default #FFFFFF represents white – to use a light gray, use #F2F2F2 instead.

To choose your custom colors, you’ll need the hex color code (also known as HTML color code) for the color you want. You can get this information from a variety of websites or programs, including RaphaelColorPicker, which we’ve covered in the directory.
After making the example tweaks above, we’d end up with the following code:

@namespace url(“http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul”);

#appmenu-button {

background: #0404B4 !important;

}

#appmenu-button dropmarker:before {

content: “MakeUseOf” !important;

color: #F2F2F2 !important;

}

#appmenu-button .button-text {

display: none !important;

Save the userChrome.css file and restart Firefox after making your changes.

Adding a Background Image Or Logo
You may want to customize the button further by adding a custom background image. This can be used to add an organization’s logo (or any other image you likes) to your Firefox menu button.
To do so, replace the “background: #orange !important;” line with the following line:

background-image: url(“image.png”) !important;
Replace image.png above with the full path to your image file. This can be a local path beginning with file:// or a remote path (URL) beginning with http://.
You can also include both the background: and background-image: lines. If your background image is partially transparent, it will be overlaid over the background color. For example, if I had a PNG image file named makeuseof.png stored in my user account’s Pictures folder, I could use the following code for the appmenu-button section:

#appmenu-button {

background: #0404B4 !important;

background-image: url(“file:///C:/Users/Chris/Pictures/makeuseof.png”) !important;

}

Customizing The Menu’s Contents
Use the Personal Menu addon for Firefox to customize the options that appear when you click your Firefox menu button. This addon gives you an Edit This Menu option when you click your Firefox menu button.

Click the option and you’ll see an easy-to-use graphical window for editing the contents of your Firefox orange menu. You can add new options, remove existing ones, or rearrange them.

NASA astronaut Don Pettit has spent a total of 370 days in space, with his most recent off-world duty ending this July after spending nearly 6 months aboard the International Space Station. In addition to being an accomplished astronaut and chemical engineer, Don has somewhat of a following for his zero-gravity science experiments.
Don’s passion for science is absolutely contagious, and through his videos it’s possible to convert even the most disinterested of people into budding physicists. If you’re interested in Don’s videos then you will probably want to subscribe to the PhysicsCentralAPS YouTube channel where his most recent experiments are still being uploaded.
Today’s Stuff to Watch will take a look at some of Don’s best and most interesting experiments, as well as some of his best quotations from the heat of the moment – so prepare to learn something!

Astro Puffs
Water in zero-gravity is a beautiful and fascinating thing, and this video demonstrates why. Using his hands and a syringe, Don is able to manipulate water by touching and blowing air to create oscillations. Of course, nothing aboard the ISS goes to waste as Don points out:
“What I’m planning to do is after this whole series of experiments, I’ll suck all of this water up in the syringe and I’ll put it back in bags and then I’ll use it to make tea with, so I end up drinking my experiments.”

Yo-Yos In Space
Don probably isn’t the first person to take a yo-yo into space, but he probably is the first to create a YouTube video explaining the physics behind a yo-yo in zero-gravity. Not only does he get to play with his yo-yo in space, but he also gets to record everything he comes up with:
“Because I’m in space, and I can, I get to name all of these yo-yo tricks as I invent them … I’m spending more time training to use the robotic arm so I can snag this little spaceship coming up here in a week or so called dragon, and I haven’t been spending as much time as I should on my yo-yo training … it just shows that I’ve got misplaced priorities.”

Space Balloonacy
Ever wondered what happens when you pop a water-filled balloon in zero-gravity? So has Don, and thankfully he’s gone and tested it out so you don’t have to spend billions on your own space program just to find out.
“Of course, you can’t do this too many times. I’m mean this is really neat. So here’s yet one more example of what happens. Each one is a little different.”

Lenses and Vortices
In a zero-gravity environment it is possible to create thin films of pure water only a few hundred microns thick, but on earth you need to use soap to achieve a similar effect. Using these films it is possible to watch diffusion and fluid motion in water, and also get lost in pretty patterns created with food colouring.
There is no “epic Don quote” in this one, but then the science and colours should be enough to keep you entertained.

Drinking Coffee In Space
Drinking coffee in space involves sipping it from a bag, rather than drinking it from a cup. That can’t be great, so Don has attempted to solve the problem by creating an airplane wing-shaped cup which causes the fluid to climb the sharp angle, similar to what is used for igniting rocket engines in a zero-gravity environment.

“This may very well be what future space colonists end up using when they want to have a celebration and do a toast. They can sip their coffee and their tea from cups like this, like we do on earth without having to suck them from a bag”
NASA control: “Don we really enjoyed that, this is a lot of fun”.

Angry Birds Space… in Space
How do you know your mobile app has made it really big? Probably when astronauts aboard the ISS are using its premise and characters to demonstrate how physics in space works, like in this video brought to you by Don, NASA and Angry Birds creator Rovio.
Part-advert and part-science experiment, Don helps explain that: “if you understand the math, if you understand the physics, it will allow you to go out and get a neat job. A job sorta like mine” – so stay in school, kids!

I don’t know about you, but having spent my childhood in North America, but not my adult years, I’ve never lost the craving for many American things I had when I grew up. To this day, I will gobble up Junior Mints whenever I’m on this side of the globe, even though I don’t even think they’re that good anymore. Many of us have such cravings, or simply want something that can only be found somewhere else. When that happens, we start looking for someone we know who’s making the trip, but many times that’s impossible to find.
This issue is on my mind a lot, and many times I thought to myself: Wouldn’t it be awesome if someone making the trip here anyway could bring what I want on the way? Seems like I wasn’t alone in that wish, as apparent from the popularity of a new service called mmMule.
mmMule is a community built around people who want things they can’t get, and people who travel the world and are willing to bring them. Part of mmMule is AngelMule, which is aimed at helping non-profit organizations around the world.
Read on to find out how you can get that thing you’ve been craving, or how you can help a fellow person get what they want.

Become A Mule
If you wish to become a Mule, that is, bring something to another person, all you have to do is search mmMule for a request in the destination you’re traveling to. You can enter only a destination, to browse all requests for that place, or enter your current location as well, to see specific requests that match your travel plans.

There are all sorts of interesting requests on mmMule, ranging from Japanese chocolate and Kangaroo meat to iPhones and pet rabbits. Browsing all the requests is interesting enough, even if you don’t plan a trip any time soon.

As you can see, those who post requests usually also post what they’d give in return for the shipment. These rewards are usually a local experience, a drink or a meal, but they can be pretty much anything. When looking for requests, you can filter them by rewards, to find someone who’s offering a reward you’re interested in. Note that regardless of reward, Mules are always paid back for their purchases, unless they’re delivering items to a non-profit organization.

You can also filter your search by the item requested, if there’s only a specific kind of item you’re willing to deliver. You can also filter the requests so you only see AngelMule charity requests, if you’re going to a place where people might need clothes, books, or anything similar.

If you find a request you can fill, communicate with that person on the built-in chat interface. Also, follow mmMule’s common sense safety tips before doing anything else.

Submitting A Request
If there’s an item you really want from somewhere in the world, you can easily submit a request to mmMule. In order to do that, you’d need to create an account on mmMule or log in using your Facebook account.
For each request you submit, you’d need to specify the item you’re after, which category it belongs to, where it can be found (optional) and where you want it shipped to. You should also specify the approximate cost of the item, and agree to pay back for the item (unless you’re a non-profit organization).

The next stage is filling in what you’re willing to give in return for the item you want. This can be pretty much anything you think your Mule will enjoy.

That’s about it. Now all you have to do is wait for someone to contact you. Naturally, you should follow the safety tips when accepting a Mule as well.

So What Is AngelMule?
AngelMule operates under the same principals as mmMule, but here it’s more about charity. If you’re traveling to a developing country, or to any destination where people may need help, you can browse the AngelMule wants to find a way you can help.
In this case, you’re probably not going to be paid back, but there are still interesting rewards offered, aside from the great feeling you get when you do a good deed.
Outlook.com is the new kid in town. Or let’s say, it’s an oldie who went to the big city and got a wardrobe upgrade. Outlook.com feels like a revamped and re-tooled Hotmail – they share quite a few common features – but I am not complaining because the finished product does look appealing. What first strikes you about Outlook.com is the absolutely clutter-free interface which is very easy on the eyes. There are a few features under the hood – like social integration and SkyDrive which should make it hold its ground against Gmail.
I don’t think you will be changing over from Gmail to Outlook.com too soon. Definitely not brand loyalty, but certainly our email habits which makes that change just a future prospect. Gmail is great by every stretch of the imagination. But even then, you can take Outlook.com for a drive around town without making Gmail feel like a partner you left for a new lover.

Have You Got Your Outlook.com Account?

Just sign-in and get your new Outlook.com email ID and clean inbox with a welcome message.
Alternatively:
You still might have your old Hotmail account which you don’t use anymore. Then again, you might be using your Gmail ID to log-in to Microsoft services like SkyDrive or Xbox Live. You can use the same credentials to get yourself a new Outlook.com inbox. You will get a message that will say that your Hotmail has been upgraded to Outlook.com.

Using Good Ol’ Email Forwarding
We have to visit Gmail first and tell it to be pally with its new rival across town. Email Forwarding is a feature you would be well advised to use between multiple accounts (even if you don’t use Outlook.com) because it always helps to keep a backup of all your emails incase the primary account gets blocked or is hacked (a more than common occurrence these days). Email forwarding is the easiest way to connect any two email accounts or to upgrade from the old to the fresh like Outlook.com.
1. Open Gmail. Click on the Gear icon and go into your mail Settings. Select the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.

2. Click the Add a forwarding address button and add your Outlook.com email address in the field.
3. Gmail sends a verification email to Outlook.com. Open the email and click on the confirmation link. Now, Gmail can forward email to your Outlook.com account.

Set Up Outlook.com to Use Your Gmail ID for Sending Emails
If you signed up in the beginning with your Gmail account, Outlook.com automatically allows you to select your Gmail account for sending emails. If you are using a fresh Outlook.com ID, you need to add the Gmail account in this step and let Outlook.com know about it.
1. In Outlook, click on the Settings icon in the upper right corner. Click on More mail settings.

2. Under the head Managing your account, select Sending/receiving email from other accounts.

3. Add the Gmail ID which you want to use to send emails by clicking on Add another account to send mail from as shown in the screenshot. Add the email account from which you want to send an email from.

4. Outlook will send a verification email to the Gmail ID entered. Go back to Gmail and verify the address by clicking on the link. You can set your Gmail ID as the default.

The recipient sees that the email has been sent on behalf of the Gmail ID by Outlook.com.

Now, when you write a fresh email, or reply, you can select your Gmail address in the “From” drop-down menu. But if the email comes forwarded from Gmail, Outlook automatically picks your Gmail ID for the reply.

Bring All Your Gmail Contacts into Outlook.com

When you connect Outlook.com to a Gmail ID, your People page automatically is populated with contacts from your Gmail account. To go to the People page, hover near the Outlook logo on the top left, and click the dropdown arrow to reveal the red icon for the People page on Outlook.com.
Now, with Outlook.com set up with your Gmail emails and contacts, you can experience it fully. Creating two parallel accounts also helps in case a doomsday scenario strikes and you lose access to one of your email accounts. Fresh email may not come in, but you will have a copy of all your old emails and contacts. Please bear in mind that Outlook.com could do a few tweaks here and there as the product matures, but it shouldn’t be too drastic. What do you think of Outlook.com? Do you love the spartan blue (or the color you chose) look? Have you tried it out so far? Give us your first impressions.
Not all too long ago, Google released the next great upgrade to the Android mobile operating system, version 4.o codenamed “Ice Cream Sandwich”, or ICS for short. While in the meantime Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean” has been released, most phones are still using Android Ice Cream Sandwich or will be updated to it soon.
Therefore, most people will be interested about what cool tricks ICS can bring to the table. I have to admit though, even I didn’t know everything on this list before I did my research.

Take Screenshots

Did you know that you can easily take screenshots with your ICS device without installing an additional app? If an option to take a screenshot doesn’t appear in the menu which appears after you hold the power button, you can also take screenshots by simultaneously holding down either the power and home buttons, or power and volume down buttons. A frame will appear around your screen, letting you know it has taken the screenshot.

Multitask With Ease

Multitasking in ICS has been improved quite a bit. In fact, on any screen, you can hold your Home button and a list of all running applications will appear. From here, you can easily tap on one to switch to it, or swipe it away to close to completely. This is also a good way of making sure that an app is really closed when you told it to.

Contact Swipe Actions
While not a new feature in ICS, you can find a contact in your contacts list and swipe to the right to call them or swipe to the left to send them a text message. This is a quicker way of contacting them through your preferred method instead of having to make a couple extra taps.

Unlock With Your Face

There’s a new way to unlock your phone! Forget using PINs or patterns when you can just use your device’s front-facing camera to scan your face! While this technique is fun and quite easy to use when it works, it’s not fool-proof and requires multiple pictures of your face in different lighting environments for it to work most of the time. As a failsafe, you’ll also have to set up an alternative unlock method so you can still get into your phone.

Take Pictures While Shooting A Video

In the past, we’ve only been able to shoot videos or snap pictures, but not both. That’s all about to change, as our camera apps are now capable of doing them at the same time. While shooting a video, just tap on your screen to take a photo. Whala!

Speak Your Words
Also not a new feature in ICS, you can now use Voice to Text in many more applications. In fact, it should be available for any text box now where your keyboard appears. It’s been improved quite a bit in ICS, so it’s worth giving a spin to give your fingers some much-needed rest.

Advanced Call Options
You can now customize how you’d like to end or deny calls in ICS. In the options, you can opt to use the power button as a way to end or deny a call so you don’t have to go hunting for the red “End Call” button. You can also deny phone calls on-screen and choose to send a text message instead from a few different templates. These settings can be found in the “Call” section of your device’s overall settings. Makes keeping people informed quite easy!

Private Browsing

A fantastic addition to ICS is the ability to create “private” tabs, which behave exactly like the Private Browsing mode in Firefox or Incognito windows in Chrome. Generally speaking, the entire tab management has improved in Android’s default browser, but private tabs are a welcome addition.

Unlock Using Your Google Account
If you’ve forgotten your PIN, password, or pattern, no need to freak out. Your phone won’t lock you out, turning your expensive piece of hardware into an even more expensive paperweight. Instead, when you hit the “locked out” phase of your distress, you’ll instead be asked to simply log back into your Google account to unlock your phone. Be sure to remember which one you chose for your phone, or else you’ll really have a paperweight in your hands!

Track Data Usage

As most of today’s data plans have data caps — usually around 2GB in America — it’s become quite important for people to keep track of their data usage. ICS devices can now do this, and even warn you when you’re getting close to that limit. Just go into your settings and choose Data Usage. You can choose a different warning level, and even opt to disable mobile data entirely once a certain amount has been reached if your carrier will charge you extra for additional data. Scrolling down presents you a list of your most data-hungry apps.

Transfer Data with Android Beam
Android Beam is a brand new technology which makes transferring data between two capable devices extremely easy. The technology uses NFC, or near field communication, as the method of communication, but the phones need to be running ICS to be Android Beam capable. With it, you can easily transfer photos as well as other multimedia.

Resizeable Widgets

Provided you’re not using a third-party launcher, you’ll now find your widgets in your application menu by either tapping on the “Widgets” tab or by swiping past all your installed apps. All these widgets are also resizeable, so you’re not forced to hold back from a widget just because you don’t have enough screen real estate.

Weather On Your Lock Screen

If you’d like, you can tell your device to have the local weather conditions appear on your lock screen. There aren’t many settings to configure besides on/off and temperature units, as the device will use your current location. It’s a very quick and easy way of determining whether you’ll need an umbrella or sweater.

Swipe Away Selected Notifications
If you have plenty of notifications waiting for you in the notifications area, but don’t want to dismiss all of them, you can swipe away those who’d like to dismiss. Just swipe the one(s) you’d like to remove to the right, and away they go. As always, you can hit the X in the top right corner to dismiss all notifications.

Keyboard Layouts In Different Languages

Your device should be capable of supporting keyboard layouts for multiple languages. I know this is definitely the case for phones which use Swipe, where the languages only need to be enabled before you can switch them on the keyboard itself with a single tap. This is great for international users who constantly need to type in more than one language.

Conclusion
And there you go! Those are 15 of the best tips available with Android Ice Cream Sandwich, all of which are extremely useful. Hopefully with this knowledge you can get a lot more done with your device, or just accomplish what you wish faster and more efficiently. Plus it’s a great way to brag to your iOS-toting friends about what your Android beast can do.
Having an active social media presence can play an important role in promoting yourself or your brand, blog or website, etc. This is because the more you can broadcast your social media presence, the more you can get your message out or reach out to collaborators or customers.
We’re subscribed to so many newsletters, and are members of a countless number of services and social networks, and usually our email accounts are always the first ones to get bogged down with a flood of messages we tend to ignore.
Add to that the way we grant third party apps permission to our social media accounts left and right, without really keeping track of who has access to what, and just the general amount of time that we waste online, there’s a lot that we can do to manage our online life.
Whether it’s just finding an easy service to unsubscribe from a lot of newsletters in one place or a more elaborate system of keeping track on how you spend your time online, there’s a lot of great sites that can help get you more organized, and get your online life under control.

Notification Control

A free service, Notification Control, claims to be able to clean up your email notifications in 1 minute, and it pretty much lives up to that.
The concept is incredibly simple – Notifications Control simply gives you access to the relevant page in each of your accounts where you can change your email notification settings.
The site currently supports Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Foursquare, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+, Meetup, Dribbble, eBay, Forrst, StumbleUpon and Path.

MyPermissions

MyPermissions comes to us courtesy of the same team behind Notification Control. It takes the same incredibly simply approach of giving you access to specific pages within your online accounts. Instead of controlling your notifications, you can use the service to figure out which third party services have access to your social media accounts.
Not only can you go to the website to clean up permissions on sites including Facebook, Twitter, Google, Instagram, Yahoo, LinkedIn, Flickr, Dropbox and much more, you can also do it on the go with a free iPhone app.
If you’re the kind of person who tends to forget to check what permissions you’ve granted access to your, often very private, social networks, the iPhone app and a Chrome extension give you the added benefit of notifications.
The great thing about MyPermissions is that you don’t even have to grant the service access to your accounts for it to do its job, since it serves as a similar bookmark service as Notification Control.

Unroll.me

Unroll.me is an amazing free service which makes it incredibly easy to get your inbox under control almost at the click of a button.
Rather than have to manually create filters and unsubscribe from individual newsletters, you can let Unroll.me do all the heavy lifting. Of course, in order to use Unroll.me, you do have to grant it access to your email account – but with a service like MyPermissions, it’s easy to simply revoke access without digging around for the relevant page to do so.
Depending on how many newsletters you’re subscribed to, Unroll.me can take a while to gather them all in one place. You can then go through the list and unsubscribe from them at a click of one button. Unroll.me also makes it easy to manage your email preferences on sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
Not only is Unroll.me good for unsubscribing to newsletters you’re not interested in receiving anymore, it can also control the influx of newsletters you do want to receive. You can direct the important newsletters to go straight to your inbox, and for the rest, you can simply ‘roll them up.’ Unroll.me automatically categorizes all of your newsletters by topic, and instead of receiving a lot of newsletters throughout the day, you can receive one notification, in the morning, afternoon or at night, and browse the list, by category, far from a decluttered inbox. Categories include social, lifestyle, shopping, news and more.
At the moment, Unroll.me only works with Gmail and Google Apps email accounts.

RescueTime
It’s no secret that the Internet makes it easier than ever to waste your precious time, and RescueTime is a great free service, with the additional option of a paid pro account for a few additional features. With RescueTime, available for both Windows and Mac, you can automatically, and with no effort on your part, keep track of how you’re spending your time online and what desktop apps you use.
After signing up for an account and installing the desktop app, RescueTime sits unobtrusively in your menu bar or task tray keeping tabs on your computer use. The paid account has the added advantage of giving you close to real-time tracking, whereas the free account has a 30 minute delay. This isn’t such a big deal, since you can simply use the app to analyse your use at the end of each day.
RescueTime provides you with how much time you spend on certain categories of apps or sites – entertainment, productivity, utilities and more. You can then drill down further and see which apps within each of those categories is sucking up your time.
Not only does RescueTime tell you where your time is going, it can use that information to map your productivity levels on a graph. It may not be the prettiest solution, but it includes all the important information.

Of course, using a service like RescueTime gives a third party service access to all of your activity on your computer. While you can pause RescueTime for 15 minutes, 1 hour, or until the next day, but either way, you should take a look at RescueTime’s privacy policy to see if you’re comfortable with the fact that they are collecting your personal data.
Most importantly, as the policy points out what kind of data is being collected:

The main thing that RescueTime collects is user behavior data including application usage and web site visits. We do not (and never will) collect keystrokes, form input, or anything nefarious. Our records include application / web site URL, web site title, start time of use, end time of use, and OS username.
If you’re comfortable with this, RescueTime is a great way to understand your online, and computer activity.
I am going to ruffle a few feathers here by saying that Microsoft OneNote is just as good as Evernote. Evernote is probably more barebones and easier to handle, while OneNote is the digital equivalent of a binder, giving you more organizational control.
The showdown will continue, so for the sake of productivity and peace, let’s say that both are great note-taking apps with their pros and cons. I use both, as and when the purpose dictates it. And I have come to love both because they have made me more organized with my note-taking.
We have covered a bit of OneNote’s capabilities with:

How To Take Office 2007 Screenshots With OneNote

How To Link MS Word 2010 To OneNote & Use It For Writing Linked Notes

How SkyDrive And OneNote Web App Can Help Your Online Research

But effective note-taking requires as many tips and tricks you can pull together. So, here for your productive pleasure are ten more.

Create Your To-Do Lists in a Jiffy
That’s how you start your day. An organizer and a diary aren’t complete without a to-do. Here’s how you set up a quick to-do list in OneNote.
You can start your daily to-do in a new Note page. Select the Home ribbon. Click on ‘To-Do’ in the tag box or use the shortcut key of CTRL+1.

Type your first to-do item. Hit Enter and then CTRL+1 to add succeeding items. If you complete your to-do, you can check them off one by one.

Use Templates and Get off The Starting Blocks

Unlike other Office apps, OneNote doesn’t make it obvious where page templates are located. It’s probably because in OneNote, there are Notebooks and Pages, two different entities. But once you know where templates are located, using them for productivity could become a habit.
Click on the little dropdown above the page list on the right hand side of OneNote. Select Page Templates to locate the one you want to use under the different categories. You can choose a template and set it as the default template, or customize a page and set it as a template.

For The Visual – Doodle or Sketch Your Ideas

A real world diary or organizer is not always neatly written. You find doodles, little sketches on the sides, and what not. OneNote being a digital equivalent gives you the Draw tab on the ribbon with quite a few drawing tools for visually representing your ideas. Draw your ideas…color them…flesh them out.

Feel Like Writing On Paper?

Does a white sheet of paper make you more creative? Or maybe, it is the soothing yellow of a legal pad? OneNote isn’t about paper at all, but two simple choices can help you duplicate the feel of writing on paper. Check out the View tab on the ribbon. Combining Page Color and Rule Lines, you can create your own writing ‘environment’. You can even set the color of the ruled lines.

Carry Your Notes with You

Note-taking is often a flash-of-the-moment process. One way to capture a note anytime anywhere is to quickly use the Android or iPhone apps that OneNote has. You can sync it across to your computer using SkyDrive as a bridge. After downloading the app, you need a Windows Live ID to log-in (same as for your SkyDrive account). You can create rich text notes with pictures, bulleted lists, checkboxes et.al.
You can capture instant photos with your phone camera and create a note from there. You can create multiple notes, and also view all your previous notes and notebooks on the first screen. All notes automatically get saved to your SkyDrive cloud. From the cloud, you can sync them across to your desktop OneNote too.
The combination of your mobile device and OneNote is great for capturing and archiving items like receipts and business cards.

The OCR Tool That’s already On Your Computer
I had mentioned in a previous article when we talked about Top 5 Free OCR Software Tools To Convert Images Into Text. The feature is retained in Microsoft OneNote 2010.
Open the document from where you would like to capture the text. Without OneNote opened and minimized, use the Windows + S shortcut (or the Screen Clipping tool in the Insert menu) to grab the section of the document you want to optically recognize.

Send the screen clip to an OneNote page. Right-click on the image that is inserted in the page, and click on Copy Text from Picture. The optically-recognized text is copied to the Clipboard.

Multimedia as Quick Notes

The quickest form of note-taking after photos is definitely recording of audio and video clips. In OneNote you can quickly record sound notes and videos (quick voice memos, meetings or class lectures) and insert them into your notes. Open the page and place the cursor where you would like to insert the media file. On the Insert tab, choose either Record Audio or Record Video. You can control the start, pause, and stop motions of the recording from the Audio-Video Playback menu.

Make Them Searchable Too

OneNote’s Audio Search feature enables you to search your audio and video recordings for words, just like you would search for keywords in your notes. You can enable the Audio Search feature in Audio & Video Settings > Options > Audio and Video. If you have loads of voice memos, this could be a fast way of trawling through them to find the needed one.

Guard Your Privacy

OneNote uses the 3DES encryption standard to password protect your sections on OneNote. This step is highly recommended if you are keeping any personal information like credit card info, passwords, legal documents etc.
To set a password for a section, click File > Password Protect this Section. Your section will be secured until you click and enter a password to unlock it. It will also be locked automatically after a period of time if you leave the section or leave your computer unattended.

The One OneNote Tip I Always Forget To Use
Simply because I don’t have to. The tip is: you don’t have to save your notes, as OneNote does it automatically. It’s only when you need to save a notebook, page, or section, under a different name, you need to use the Save As…function.
These ten Onenote tips do not even begin to cover the awesome range of features OneNote gives you. OneNote is more often than not one of the neglected applications in the Office suite. But hopefully these ten tips just might make you turn your eyes away from the prima donnas and take a look at the wallflower who could be a princess. Do you use OneNote? After several large ISPs in the UK and the Netherlands were ordered to block The Pirate Bay this year, reverse proxy sites popped up left and right.
These sites allow users to access the BitTorrent site through an alternate domain name. The UK Pirate Party operates the most visited proxy site and they alone get more than a million visits a month.
In total, more than 5% of all Pirate Bay users now access the site through a proxy.
While these proxies work well they don’t allow people to access the site through the official thepiratebay.se domain. This means that referrals through Google and meta-search engines such as Torrentz no longer work. At least, not without a bit of effort.
Those who know their way around a computer can edit their “hosts file” to link the original Pirate Bay domain to one of the many reverse proxies. All they have to do is add a few lines and The Pirate Bay becomes available again via its usual address.
To simplify this process The Pirate Patch was coded by the Dutch-based Pirate Bay user Qarizma. The Windows application automatically adds the required entries into the hosts file through a simple batch script.
“The real domain is blocked where I live, and it gives me a kick when I browse The Pirate Bay on the original URL. It just feels better,” Qarizma told TorrentFreak in a comment.
The application has three options. People can install it, remove the changes that were made, or ask for an update if it’s no longer working. Qarizma told TorrentFreak that he maintains and updates the list of working proxy IP-addresses himself.

Pirate Patch

The Pirate Patch is Open Source and the batch file is accessible by extracting the .exe file. While the application works as advertised, some anti-virus software may block it because of the edits it makes to the hosts system file, although the same edits can easily be made manually.
Initiatives such as The Pirate Patch show that while these blockades may stop some people from accessing a site, the really determined have plenty of options.
Proof of the ineffectiveness of censorship attempts was recently highlighted by several Dutch and UK Internet providers, who claimed that BitTorrent traffic didn’t decline after the blockades were implemented.
The iOS and Mac appstores have had lots of appeal with users. Those who would like to have something like this for Windows (which can display installed apps, apps that have updates, or even create a backup of all applications in order to reinstall them later), should take a look at ‘AllMyApps’.
Allmyapps is like a Windows App Store where you can find, download, install, and restore applications, and/or update them. It is a personal application manager for all apps on your Windows PC, and a great tool for keeping your applications organized and up to date. All you need to do to get started is download and install it, and log in with an ‘AllMyApps’ account or simply use your Facebook, Twitter or Google ID.
If you love going out for meals, you know how important the feel of the place is. I mean, you might know a place that sells the tastiest Chinese food you’ve ever eaten, but if it’s a dive you’re going to head there for takeaway rather than a long meal. The same goes the other way around. Some places are just so classy that you don’t mind either paying larger amounts of money for your food or putting up with something slightly less than perfect.
The fact is, what the place looks like matters. The vibe of the place, the decor and the mood that sets is vitally important in setting the tone for your night out. If it’s right you’re going to be pleased, but if it’s off then you may as well have stayed at home. This is the problem Hoppit has come to solve for you: How to find the best bars and restaurants by what they look like and what sort of vibe they have. Read on for a completely new way of exploring your local restaurants.

Browsing Restaurants
So, pick a vibe for your night out. Something a bit Mad Men? Something cosy and quaint? Or maybe something a bit hipster? Still unsure? Pick all that apply. Plug in your city and maybe also add the sort of food you’re looking for and you know you’re heading in the right direction. Who are you with? Is it small kids, a good book or business colleagues?

You’d think that would be plenty enough options, but there’s actually more you can specify. Choose places with deals, filter restaurants from a number of different cuisines, find somewhere good to chat, pick the neighbourhood, or decide you want to eat somewhere only the 1% can afford. You just keep narrowing the options down until you’ve found the perfect place.

Now, when you see the results you notice that you’re given a map originally, then a picture of the actual venue loads over the top. It’s that perfect picture of the ideal bar or restaurant that will ultimately sway your decision. You’re also given the best matches up the top with some other near-enough choices thrown in for good measure. Click through on any venue and you’ll get more great photos and extra information on location, specifics and booking numbers.

The only downside? Well, the only restaurants listed are in the US for now. Anyone can give it a try, but until it expands worldwide it’s not of much use for people outside the US.

Your Lookbook
All this searching and browsing can be done without logging in. So, why would you? Well, to keep track of the best places, that’s why. Log in with your Facebook login and you can create your Lookbook of all the best bars and restaurants you’ve found while checking out Hoppit. You’ll never be at a loss for a great venue with this up your sleeve. To add something to your lookbook, simple click on the heart icon either on the venue’s page or in the corner of the photo when you hover over it in search results.
