4 Ways To Prevent Computer-Related Eye Strain Without Losing Productivity

4 Ways To Prevent Computer-Related Eye Strain Without Losing Productivity:

computer eye strainDo you spend many hours in front of a computer screen? If you do, you’re probably familiar with the inescapable computer eye strain that comes with it. Headaches, burning eyes, itchiness and just being tired, are all symptoms of long hours of staring at a screen.

I will be the first one to tell you that the ultimate solution is to spend less time at the computer. Taking a walk or looking out the window are all effective ways to relieve eye strain. Unfortunately, we can’t always get up when we feel like it and go for a stroll. It’s also hard to remember to take breaks when we’re so engrossed in our work. So how can you remember to give your eyes some relief without totally losing your train of thought in the process?

EyeDefender [Windows]

EyeDefender operates under the same principle as many eye relief web apps – break reminders – but being a desktop app, it’s harder to get away from.

The app sits in your tray, and counts down to the next break. When the time comes, you can choose from four different eye-resting activities: looking at pictures of your choosing, doing some eye exercises, activate the default screensaver or just pop up a balloon reminder (for those with excellent will power).

I find the visual training to be especially useful. The screen darkens, and you get to follow the display with your eyes and move your eyes around a bit. This works even on dual monitors, and you cannot get back to work until the break is over. A definite improvement to the constant staring at a bright screen.

Workrave [Windows & Linux]

Workrave is a nice open-source break reminder which includes reminders for micro-breaks (short), rest breaks (long) and daily limits for computer time.

You can set the breaks any way you want, and choose whether you want to have the option to skip or postpone the break. The break is simply a window letting you know of the break, but when it’s activated, you can’t use your computer until the break is over (or until you choose to skip or postpone).

During the breaks, you can get up from the computer, look away, or do some exercises the app provides in its interface.

f.lux [Windows, Mac & Linux]

If you want to relieve computer eye strain even while you work, f.lux is an excellent solution. This well-known app automatically adapts your screen brightness to the time of day, thus preventing the eye strain which comes with staring at a very bright screen in a dark room.

All you have to do is set your current location, and f.lux will automatically determine what time the sun sets and will dim your display at the right moment every day. If you’re doing color-sensitive work, you can disable f.lux for one hour. This is a great way to relieve eye-strain between your resting breaks.

Sunglasses [Chrome]

Sunglasses is a cute Chrome extension which lets you control the browser’s brightness separately from the rest of your computer.

Say you’re reading a lengthy article in Chrome, and at some point find the whole thing to be way too bright. Simply click the sunglasses icon on the top right, choose your new brightness and click save. You can now continue reading or working in a much darker and more soothing environment. This controls only your browser, so the general brightness settings will not be touched.

The extension also sports keyboard shortcuts if you’re a keyboard person. One thing I would like to see added is the option to set different brightness settings for different tabs.

Turn Any WordPress Site Into A BitTorrent Tracker

Turn Any WordPress Site Into A BitTorrent Tracker:

wp-traderWith WordPress pretty much anyone can set up a personal blog or small website in a few minutes, and thanks to the new WP-Trader plugin it becomes just as easy to start a fully operational torrent site.

The levels of work and expertise required to run a large torrent site shouldn’t be underestimated of course, but there are also hundreds of hobbyists out there who have the desire to set up a small torrent site of their own. WP-Trader is aimed at the latter, and it has a wide range of features that support the needs of every self-aspiring torrent site admin.

WP-Trader developer Andrew Walker told TorrentFreak that he saw the need for an ultra-simple torrent script through his half-decade long involvement in the forums of the popular Torrent Trader script.

“All of the torrent tracker source codes out there are unique or good in their own ways, but I saw a lack in one click install and setup for torrent sites since only a couple of sources offer that function. On a daily basis I saw people coming into the forums having problems with install and setup of their sites,” Walker told TorrentFreak.

“I do have a strong belief that if you do not know how to install or mod your own torrent site then you should not be running a torrent site but something like WP-Trader can benefit artists who have little to no knowledge about how to set up a site,” Walker adds.

So the idea for WP-Trader was born, and little over a month ago the first version was released via the WordPress plugin repository. Since then, Walker and his co-developer Lee Howarth have added new updates every week, and they’re dedicated to improving it further during the coming months.

“At the moment the plugin is still in beta and does lack a lot of features but new things are being added weekly. The plugin was built around Torrent Trader V2.07 and some things you see in Torrent Trader will stay, we were are trying to use a lot of the built-in functions of WordPress,” Walker adds.

The current release already comes with a wide range of options and a fully functioning tracker. Users can choose to make all uploads public and allow external trackers for example, but it’s also possible to run a completely private tracker with ratio requirements and wait times for lower user classes.

In addition, WP-Trader comes with several widgets, to show off the latest uploads and most active torrents for example. The full list of features is too long to list here, but you can get a glimpse of the options below.

While WP-Trader already has all the features a basic torrent site needs, there is still a lot of work to be done. Aside from ironing out the bugs and implementing new features such as support for anonymous uploads, the developers will also work on a more seamless integration with WordPress.

“We plan on fully integrating it as closely as possible with WordPress because WordPress has plenty of features or plugins to handle certain things which we feel that should not be added to the plugin,” Walker says.

The WP-Trader team hopes that a lot of people will take the plugin for a spin, and provide feedback where needed. WP-Trader is available for download in the official WordPress repository, which also hosts a FAQ section and some pointers on how to get a torrent site up and running in no time.

5 Reasons For Using Anonymous Email Services To Get Your Message Across

5 Reasons For Using Anonymous Email Services To Get Your Message Across:

why anonymous emailIt’s probably the biggest myth of the digital age that we are hidden on the web. There is no foolproof iron curtain. But even then, there exist many ways to maintain relative anonymity. Anonymizers exist in some form or the other; all geared to prevent the detection and tracing of user activity on the web.

One such class of anonymous services is about the use of emails. Anonymous emails allow you to send emails without revealing your ID or detectable fingerprints like your IP. A layman cannot begin to take the anonymous digital route that easily; he has to depend on hosted services like disposable email IDs to anonymous remailing tools to remain a John Doe (or Jane Doe).

Sending an email without letting the recipient know can be used for a variety of non-malicious causes which make them really useful. Here are five for your consideration.

Hide your real email ID and fight spam

Few are aware that email addresses are deliberately harvested. Email harvesting is an “accepted” practice in the sense that there are online and software tools that can pluck publicly available email addressed from webpages, mailing lists, and discussion boards. But on the other side, email harvesting is used by spammers and used for bulk emailing. In many parts of the world, it has been deemed illegal, though your inbox will tell you otherwise.

why anonymous email

To keep your inbox spam free (after questionable web signups), you can use services like Notsharingmy.info. A previous post takes a close look at how you can – Hide Your Real Email Address When You Do Web Signups With NotSharingMy.Info

Tell the bitter truth

Anonymous emails can be great for feedback – usually of the negative kind. It could range from something harmless but needed like telling a friend that he stinks, to telling your boss something he does not want to hear. Protecting your identity behind the anonymity of an untraceable email could be wise if the recipient has a history of taking bad news badly.

We took a look at 5 Websites For Self Improvement With Some Anonymous Feedback From Friends. AnonEmail is a simple text based anonymous email service. There are also other email based services like Send-Email and Voxopolis that allow you to send anonymous and secure messages.

reasons for anonymity

For instance, Voxopolis is a tool for secure anonymous interactive messaging. Using its QuickVox service, you can send an anonymous email in 60 seconds flat. The free account also lets you attach images and videos to spice up your feedback, question, or survey. Voxopolis looks appealing because it carried a trusted certificate from TRUSTe. The slight annoyance is that to read an anonymous message, you have to register for an (free) account. But on the other hand, that helps to monitor and follow-up on the conversation with the nameless sender.

Be a whistleblower

Whistleblowers can escape persecution and harassment by using anonymous email services. It is the equivalent of a phone tip. Of course, to be taken seriously you should also supply credible proof to go with your complaint. With proof, an anonymous email can be a powerful vehicle of change. You can prevent a crime before it happens, report corruption, complain against bad civic services, tip off the media, foil child abuse …the reasons could go on.

Express your love

reasons for anonymity

Saying “I love you” perhaps ranks among the more difficult things to express. You can break through the tongue-tied status quo by using an anonymous message service like Had To Say. Hadtosay.com is a very simple web app (not exactly an email service though) that lets you print out cards with a message ID and a PIN. The card can be printed out and delivered secretly. The message ID on the card allows the person to log into the site and view the special message you have left there. The recipient can choose to leave an answer below your message. (Directory mention)

Play a prank

why anonymous email

Though the idea of using fake emails to play pranks seems a bit outdated to me, it could still raise a few laughs if the victim if naïve enough. I guess the rate at which people click emails from Nigeria and Bill Gates, suggests that there’s still a few out there who still can be led up a blind alley…but strictly for laughs. Give it a trial run before April with Anonymailer. You can use the anonymous email service to “impersonate” anyone you choose.

The only loophole I could see was the ad line that gets inserted in the email body. Just about halves the fun. I couldn’t find another similar service; if you do, do put it in the comments.

Check out the apps tagged as anonymous in our directory.

Anonymity has its uses. But it could be double-sided if used wrongly. Misuse of anonymous email services could lead to legal consequences. Research says that anonymous emails can also be tracked. But there are some benign uses of anonymous messages. What would be some of yours? Let us know the value you place on being anonymous.

How To Put Your Face On A Different Body Using GIMP

How To Put Your Face On A Different Body Using GIMP:

how do i put my face on a different body using gimpAdmit it, playing around with image editing tools such as Photoshop and GIMP can be pretty fun, depending on what you’re trying to do. Virtually anything can be done with these tools, from some simple photo touch-ups all the way to creating impressive graphics from scratch (or some combination of both).

However, it’s not as fun if you only have an idea and you don’t actually know how to do it. Don’t worry though. Today we’ll be covering a classic – how to put your face on another body using GIMP.

Why GIMP?

I like writing articles about GIMP instead of Photoshop because, legally speaking, GIMP is freely available for everyone to use, and it’s definitely got some powerful tools. You simply have to take some time to learn it, and it’ll become a very worthy alternative to Photoshop. In any case, even for the inexperienced, Microsoft Paint is a disgrace by a long shot when compared to GIMP.

If you don’t already have it, you can download and install GIMP from their official site. GIMP is available for Windows, Linux, and Mac (although Mac’s version is kind of difficult to install).

Getting Started

gimp face swap

When you’re ready to go, fire up GIMP and open one image with your face and another with the body you want to put your face on. You can minimize the picture with the body for now, as the main task at hand right now is “extracting” your face from the other picture.

“Extracting” Your Face

gimp face swap

In the left panel of buttons, you’ll need to find the one that I highlighted in the screenshot, named the Paths Tool. With this tool, you’re going to make a path that goes all the way around your face until it makes a complete loop and selects what’s inside of it. Technically you can also use the Free Select Tool, but you’ll have to make your loop in one go, and trust me, it will not look as good.

Making The Loop

gimp face swap

With the Path Tool selected, you can begin clicking around your face. Each click will make a point that the line/loop has to go through, as you can see in the screenshot or once you do it yourself. Therefore, the more zoomed in you are, the more accurate your loop will be. Preferably, you should place the loop on the edge of your face. You can also bend the lines between points for more accuracy by right clicking on the line and moving the mouse around. Don’t forget, you can always undo everything you do, so if you misplace a point, you can always undo it and try again.

Finishing The Loop

gimp face replace

It’ll be normal for all of this to take a couple of minutes, especially if you’re working with a high-resolution photo. You’ll have to keep doing this, all the way around your face, until you meet up again with the first point that you made. Once you do, click again on the first point that you made to complete the loop. It’s OK if a line doesn’t actually appear between the first and the last point, as it will be assumed in the next step. This last line won’t be curved though, so if major accuracy is required, try to make your last point as close as possible to the first one.

Final Steps

how do i put my face on a different body using gimp

With the loop laid out, you’ll find a button labeled “Selection from Path” at the bottom of the left panel. Click this, and a selection will now have been made using the loop. You can now copy over the selection using Ctrl + C or via the Edit menu –> Copy. Now you can move over to the other image with the body, create a new layer (which will make it easier to work with), and paste your face onto that image. You can now resize and move your face around until it’s where it’s supposed to be.

Conclusion

I have to admit, unless you have some major luck, the lighting will probably be off and your face therefore won’t perfectly melt into place as if it was an original image. There are a couple things you can do to make it less obvious, but all of that is a topic for another article. However, it’s still a fun effect, and the phrase “practice makes perfect” rings true in this case.

What’s your favorite thing to do with GIMP? Considering all aspects (including price), do you prefer GIMP or Photoshop for use by anyone who isn’t a total professional? Let us know in the comments!
