Oh, zombies. We’ll never get tired of your cute little decaying faces, so long as you never get tired of the living trying to mow you down with everything from shotguns to school buses.
It’s no surprise that some of the best games for Android just so happen to be about zombies. Let’s have a look at five titles that will surely help you fulfill your undead-killing quota.
Stupid Zombies
The title of this game is less of a description and more of an insult, but thankfully the game itself is far deeper. Stupid Zombies is a physics-based puzzler where players have to kill all the zombies on a level, but with only five bullets. The bullets ricochet, and can be used to move or destroy objects.
Games like this usually live or die based on their controls and level design. Thankfully, both are excellent in Stupid Zombies. New situations are constantly arising to test your skill, and the controls are intuitive and accurate. Frankly, I think this game is better than Angry Birds, and it deserves plenty of love. Stupid Zombies is free and requires Android 2.2 or better.
Plants vs Zombies
Popcap is one of the most consistent “casual” game companies around, and Plants vs Zombies is one of the developer’s most popular titles. It’s essentially a tower defense game, but the gameplay is different from most such titles, as the zombies come down the “lanes” of your lawn rather than following a maze-like path. Players can defend themselves not only by killing zombies but also by building walls and using plants that slow the undead.
Everyone who likes tower defense games or zombies absolutely must give this game a try. You won’t find it on the Android Marketplace however, because it’s only available via the Amazon.com App Store. It’s $2.99 and requires Android 1.5 or better.
Typing Zombie
Typing games are as old as keyboards themselves, and they’re often used as learning tools for people who’ve just started to wrap their hands around a keyboard. As a result, they’re rarely challenging for PC geeks – but the keyboards on smartphones are another matter.
If you’d like to become a better smartphone typist, this game can help. But it’s also a lot of fun even if you’re already well acquainted with your phone’s keyboard. This game will improve your typing accuracy while increasing your heart-rate. Typing Zombie is free and requires Android 1.5 or better.
Zombie Runaway
Unlike the other games on this list, Zombie Runaway doesn’t involve killing zombies. Instead, you are the zombie – and for whatever reason, you need to run through a graveyard, fast!
The premise is just an excuse for the gameplay, but who cares? The game is fun, challenging, and features decent 3D graphics. Although the first few minutes are easy, progressing further along the path results in new types of obstacles as well as new upgrades and bonuses that will help you along your way. Hit three obstacles, and you’re zombie toast! Zombie Runaway is free and requires Android 2.1 or better.
Age of Zombies
This cross-platform zombie shooter has been released on a wide variety of platforms and given great praise on all of them. Made by Halfbrick, the developer behind the simple but much-loved Fruit Ninja, this is a snarky top-down combat game that sends Barry Steakfries tumbling through time to fight all manner of brain-loving baddies.
Barry has a lot of firepower for such a small dude, and he can use it a variety of different ways. In addition to this, each level has unique opponents and there are some fun boss fights to be found. While not a revolutionary game, it’s well executed, and one of the most enjoyable games on Android. Age of Zombies is $3.29 and requires Android 1.6 or better.
Conclusion
Predictably, looking up “zombies” on Android Marketplace resulted in a huge number of results, not only in the form of games but also wallpapers and themes. If you’ve played a zombie related Android title that deserves recognition, let us know in the comments.
