Reddit is more than just a time sink where you can look at pretty girls, read about nerdy stuff, and procrastinate as you build a memory of random trivia. Reddit can be used to learn things, believe it or not. A lot of people Reddit while they’re in class. If you check out the subreddits discussed in this article, maybe you’re better off. (Stay in school, kids.)
In another of my articles, I turned you guys towards how to find new and interesting subreddits that aren’t exactly “mainstream,” without using the Hipster Kitty meme even a single time. Here, I am going to point you to the subreddits where you can go to acquire brain power. Let’s get smarter.

TIL is a Reddit classic boasting over a million subscribers. This subreddit is crammed to the top, all day and every day, of things that I bet you never knew. Just looking at the frontpage right now, here are a few example:
Without this subreddit, how many of you would have known there is a dog with 24 toes? Would you have known that birds masturbate? Would you know that David Hayter, the voice behind Solid Snake, gave up half his paycheck to bring back the original voice cast of MGS for the GameCube remake, “The Twin Snakes”? I bet you wouldn’t have.
Seriously, subscribe to this one. It’s not one of those “not again” subreddits.
/r/YouShouldKnow
YSK is a lot like TIL, except from a more informative and outreaching perspective. This subreddit focuses on those little things that you should (and probably want to) know, but don’t. Things like:
What where you in life before you knew that you could scratch your throat by massaging your ear? You should also know that you can buy 95 pounds of cereal marshmallows online. Also, there’s a website that streams all of the old Cartoon Network cartoons.
In all honestly, it isn’t much different from TIL, but you can’t have too much of a good thing.
/r/LifeProTips
LPT is probably an all-time top 3 subreddit for me. Life hacks are absolutely awesome, and there are so many in this subreddit that I need a life hack just to better digest all of the information.
You can post here to share or to request tips for a certain scenario. I learn something new and helpful every time I check this subreddit out. I learned something while going there just to take that screenshot, actually. Awesome.

IWTL, or the unofficial homework help subreddit, is an amazing place to go if you have a very narrow and specific topic that you crave more information on.
On the internet, “Google it” is an appropriate response to almost any situation. However, some bright minds do lurk and contribute to this subreddit. Some of this stuff can’t be told by a search engine anyway. Some of this stuff is backed by just pure experience and comes as solid, person-to-person advice.
/r/fascinating
While it may be the dwarf in this group, this subreddit is a solid source of jaw-dropping discovery.
This one is really for the more refined and mature, as most of the subject here has to do with stuff like history, space, technology, etc. It’s very inactive as of today, but serves as a nice little graveyard of information.
You’re a lot smarter after reading this post. Trust me. If you want to drop any knowledge on me or share any other cool and educational subreddits, let me hear about it in the comments. Otherwise, keep on reading while we’re on the subject:
