Keep Your Brain Ticking With These 5 Android Memory Training Apps

Keep Your Brain Ticking With These 5 Android Memory Training Apps:

memory apps for androidMemory wanes. That’s the bad news. The good news is that you can stave it off. Memory makes us human…just imagine if you couldn’t recall the what, when, who, where, and why that makes up our lives! Human memory has been studied since time immemorial and though we have solved a few puzzles, we are nowhere close to shutting the case book on it.

On an individual level, I am finding out that the barrage of information each day is shortening my recall. I guess my brain can store only that much and not more.

As experts advise, it’s time to sharpen the axe. So, I am heading to the Android Market to check out a few apps which can be my whetstone. You can head there too before the good ‘ol memory goes dull on you.

Memory Trainer (1.6+)

With 5 million downloads so far, this Android brain game is definitely on top of the list. This app helps to better your spatial memory skills. The app puts you through a few mental exercises (workouts) that also help you with your focus. Graphically it is well designed from the first screen to the last. Twenty sessions each with a different level of difficulty cover areas like number recall, colors and shapes, spatial recall, and more. A recent update called N-Back tests your fluid intelligence, i.e. can your brain remember if the current image or letter is the same that came earlier? Memory Trainer also tracks your progress so that you can measure if your axe is sharpening over time.

Math Genius Brain Trainer (1.5+)

Math comes with logic and that’s arguably one of the most difficult skills to develop. But it’s not impossible, and you can have a crack at it with the Math Genius Brain Trainer and its bagful of number crunching exercises. The math game has multiple levels – you can start off with the easy, and then cross over to normal and hard. The game is timed and you have to compete against the clock when you try to combine numbers to equal the amount in one of the corners. A bit like Sudoku with a clock ticking away.

bBoggled (2.1+)

This is a lesser known game that you can try out and test it against your memory, strategy & quantitative skills. If it does your ego any good, you can share your scores with your friends. The game is based on card memory. A grid of yellow cards is displayed – each containing a number or mathematical operation which you have to remember and recall using your mathematical knowledge. If you get it right cards get removed, if you get it wrong an extra card is added. You cannot go up the levels if you don’t clear each one-by-one.

Math Workout (1.6+)

Math Workout works you over with sets of basic mathematical exercises and puzzles. It’s a different sort of game to the earlier one in our list. If you have a fear of math just like I did, then this is a game to tide over that in a fun way. The workouts are actually very simple but the trick is in doing them rapidly in succession and defeating the clock. The World Challenge is for you to take on the world and get your ranking in the leaderboard.

Mind Games (2.1+)

There are 16 types of puzzles with 165 levels of different difficulty. The download is about 9.7 MB, so there are lots of nicely designed brainteasers to wrap your mind around. The games are quite hard to break through and just might test the limits of your patience. Games are based on Chess, Checkers, and the game’s intro screen warns you that there’s no easy way into the puzzles and no easy way out. And that’s what it proved as I had a heck of time crossing the threshold of the first game. Puzzle freaks should like this one.

The Android store has games galore. The idea is to keep your mind active and stretch it somehow. We have a whole lot of ways to do some brain gymnastics with our previous lineup of posts:
