Tell the World how you feel with TinySong

tinySong

Having an emotional moment but just can't seem to express yourself with words? Well send a TinySong and tell the World how you feel with music instead.

TinySong is a nifty new application from the folks at GrooveShark that allows you to search for a track on the GrooveShark database, then gives you a short link that you can cut and paste into into an email, instant message or add to a blog entry if you want to funk it up.

TinySong is the latest project from the folks at GrooveShark who have recently been aggressively marketing their service with dirt cheap music download offers such as their Mothers Day 49 cent download offer. TinySong links in to GrooveShark's' marketing efforts as it not only allows users to share songs, but also allows the TinySong recipient to purchase the track they are sent if they are getting into the groove.

The service has only had a soft launch, so you'll have to excuse any quirks, according to the good people at GrooveShark next steps include Twitter and Tumblr integration before a wider launch of the service.

ICONlook: icon search engine

When it comes to tracking down some icons for a project -- nothing real fancy, and preferably under some kind of open license -- image searching on Google doesn't always do the trick. ICONLook is a search site that you can try instead: it's specifically for icons, and it has some useful features that make it worth a peek if you're in a pinch. These are generally OS-type icons, for stuff like apps, documents and search buttons, so don't get your hopes up for anything too fanciful. Heck, we couldn't even find anything as wild and crazy as a cat icon on ICONLook.

Selection is not ICONLook's strong point. Even within the categories it's designed for, there's not a lot of variety. On the plus side, many of the icons are available in a number of different sizes, and there are links to the source and the license for each one. This puts to rest any worries that this might be some kind of hack job, or the work of nefarious icon pirates. Instead, what you get is a legitimate, middle of the road selection of licensed icons that will hopefully expand to become more useful.

Medison Celebrity - The $150 Linux laptop

Need a laptop, but don’t have a few hundred bucks lying around? If you could manage to scrape up $150, then you can have yourself a brand new fully-functional notebook.

Madison Celebrity

The Medison Celebrity is powered by an Intel Celeron M 370 which is clocked at 1.5GHz, 256MB of DDR2 (expandable to 1GB) a 40GB hard drive and a combo drive. You’ll also get 3 USB 2.0 ports, a PCMCIA card slot, Ethernet, 802.11g wireless.

One thing to note is that like all cheap PCs, it’s going to come with Linux. I’m pretty sure that for $150 you can learn to love Linux. However, I will admit that this deal does sound far too good to be true, so proceed with caution. There is a 4-6 week shipping time, so it’ll be a month at least before you know whether or not your $150 investment will bear fruit.

DupliFinder: Find duplicate and similar images on your PC

DupliFinder

Ever wish you could scan your entire photo directory to find and delete duplicate images? Sure, one or two pictures here and there might not take up that much space. But when you realize that you've accidentally stored your entire wedding album in three different folders, that's a whole different story. Of course, you don't want to start deleting images until you're absolutely certain they're identical. And that's where DupliFinder comes in.

This Windows-only utility will scan any directory (and optionally its subdirectories) and look for identical images. But that's not all. It will also look for images that are compositionally similar. As you can see in the screenshot, this means you won't just find exact copies of an image, but also pictures that look a little bit like your original image. This can come in handy if you're looking for another picture of your kid or dog to send to your parents. Or you know, if you're looking for a picture of a microphone.

It takes a while to scan large directories. And the open dialog is a bit awkward. You can either browser your My Pictures folder, or you can drag and drop a directory to DupliFinder from Windows Explorer. There's no way to navigate to folders outside of your My Documents directory with the browse feature.

Fotosizer - Batch Image resizing made easy

Fotosizer is a freeware batch image resizer tool. It resizes your photos in just 3 easy steps - 1. Photo selection, 2. select resize settings, then 3. Start the resize!

Fotosizer screenshots

Increasingly, sharing photos on the internet is becomming more and more popular. Photos, represented as JPEG files from digital cameras, taken at high resolutions are far too large to send over the Internet, with some photos ending up at 5 mega bytes. Uploading one photo to a photo sharing website is fine, but 10, 20, or even more, this can take forever, especially on a dial-up connection.

With Fotosizer, you can shrink JPEG image files, along with other supported formats, and dramatically reduce internet transfer times, enabling you to quickly and easily prepare your image collections to be published on the web.

Help unlock the photos from your digital camera. Use Fotosizer to batch resize your photos making it easier and faster to email to friends, upload to photo sharing websites or upload to websites that offer photo printing services.

Fotosizer lets you resize in 3 easy steps, allowing you to choose the photos you want to resize, the dimensions, and where you want to save the new photos.

Resize quickly and easily using a preset list of sizes including iPod, iPhone, and Sony PSP screen sizes.

Torrent2exe

About Torrent2exe.com

You usually have to install a client on your PC to download files shared with BitTorrent. You’ll do perfectly well without the client if you use Torrent2exe.com.

1. Have a site or blog? Publishing exe files on your site or blog makes downloads easy for visitors.

2. Add extra functionality to your torrent-related site. You can put direct links to these downloads together with links to the torrent files. The format of the URL is

http://torrent2exe.com/scripts/get_exe.php?url=site.com%2Ffile.torrent

where 'site.com%2Ffile.torrent' is the encoded URL of the torrent file. You can use the special script which adds these links to a popup window. Just write

between and (you can upload this script to your server and correct 'src' value). Move the mouse over this link to see the script functioning.

3. Your friends still don’t have any client program? Process the torrents before sending to them.

How does it work?

Now it is really simple to download data via BitTorrent protocol with Torrent2exe.com.

1. Enter the torrent file URL or upload the torrent file to the server.

2. The download of the small program starts automatically.

3. This program will automatically do the rest of the job. After you launch the program, your data starts to be downloaded.

4. Seeding. Don’t shut the program down after the download is complete. Leave it running for a couple of hours to seed downloaded data. Thus the data will be transmitted to other users. Your access to downloading other files can be denied if you don’t allow other users to download data from your PC.

Any questions?

DupeDeDupe removes duplicate Windows Mobile contacts

Have you ever read an article where the title pretty much tells you everything there is to know? Yeah, this article is basically one of those. DupeDeDupe is an applications for Windows Mobile devices that searches for duplicate contacts from your address book.

Paul at MoDaCo wrote the utility, and it's designed to work with AppToDate, which means you can automatically download any future updates.

DupeDeDupe compares each contact's "file as" and email fields as well as home, work, and mobile phone numbers. If all of those fields match, the application considers your contact to be a duplicate.

Overall, the tool is easy to use, fast, and best of all free. It should work on any device running Windows Mobile 5.0 or newer.

Jotti's Malware Scan: Online virus scanner

Jotti's Malware Scan
Nothing really beats a good firewall or anti-malware program that offers real-time protection. But if something was going to come close, we'd say a tool that lets you check files against 20 different antivirus might come close. Jotti's Malware Scan is an online tool that lets you upload a file and scan it with 20 different antivirus tools including Avast, ClamAV, and Kaspersky.

Note that there's a big ole warning on the site letting users know that just because Jotti's Malware Scan says a file is clean doesn't mean it's safe to run that executable file you found on BitTorrent that promises to show nude pictures of Billy Ray Cyrus -- wait, no, that's not the person people are looking for naked photos of, is it? Anyway, this warning message was probably placed on the site to point out that the developers take no responsibility for any problems you may have with files scanned. But in general, we'd say that if you feel the need to scan a file with 20 different antivirus applications, you probably already know that you shouldn't be opening it.

TypeRacer: Competitive typing test - Time Waster

TypeRacer
You probably think you're hot stuff because you can type 90+ words per minute. But how well do you perform when you've got a couple of other speed typists hot on your heels? While competitive typing isn't likely to hit the Olympics, or even ESPN2 anytime soon, TypeRacer is an online game that makes typing speed tests a bit more interesting by letting you see how your skills stack up against others.

TypeRacer asks you to type a relatively short snippet of text, which may be a quote from a book, movie, or something else you can purchase on Amazon (the site is designed to make money by getting you to click on Amazon affiliate links). As you're typing, a little car will move across the screen and you can see other drivers/typists racing. New races start pretty regularly so you should only have to wait a few seconds to join a race.

Just remember, if you spend too much time eying the competition, you're going to fall behind and then you'll never make the high scores list.

Wigix wants to be the next eBay, offers no-fee auctions to do it

Wigix

In case you hadn't noticed, there's been a bit of a revolt among eBay power sellers. Basically, eBay increased some fees, which led some buyers to hold a boycott. But the truth of the matter is eBay is a giant, and if you make a decent portion of your income buying and selling goods on eBay, there aren't a ton of good alternatives. Wigix wants to change that, and the site is willing to waive fees on all items sold for less than $25 to do it. For pricier items, WIgix has significantly lower transaction fees than you'll find on eBay.

Wigix isn't exactly an auction like eBay. Rather, it's an "exchange," which lets buyers and sellers connect with one another. Sellers don't have to fill out product descriptions manually. Instead they choose from a database of products which already have product descriptions. This database also makes the search process easy for buyers. When you start to enter a term in the search box, Wigix will provide a list of items to chose from before you even hit enter. When you find the item you're looking for, you can see how many buyers and sellers there are, and you can set a price at which you're wiling to buy an item. As soon as the item is available for that price, Wigix will hook you up with a seller.

You can conduct similar transactions with eBay's Half.com, which lets you "pre-order" an item which will automatically be purchased as soon as someone offers one for sale at your desired price. But Half.com only includes books, movies, music, and video games, while Wigix users can sell pretty much anything.

iSwish: Yet another pretty iPhone clone for Windows Mobile

While Flick Software's iSwish Project certainly isn't the first attempt we've seen to emulate the iPhone interface for Windows Mobile, it's definitely one of the prettiest, most effective looking. At least if we go on the video above. But if you look closely, you'll notice a few things in this video:
  1. While the demonstration shows a user zooming in and out of pictures by "pinching" the screen, our guess is that the device, which doesn't recognize multi-touch is actually just detecting the motion of one finger.
  2. The program launcher interface is pretty, but at least once in the video, we're pretty sure we caught the producers stopping and restarting the video to make it look like an application actually started up more quickly.
The biggest problem with any iPhone clone for Windows Mobile is that beauty is only skin deep. The software appears to include a program launcher and support for SummerBoard themes, and maybe a program or two. But once you launch your application, you'll find that you've still got the same Windows Mobile software running under the hood. Some of it's pretty, some of it's functional, and some is anything but (Pocket Internet Explorer, anybody?)

Flick's iSwish is due out sometime in May, and should work with a variety of Windows Mobile devices, including older gizmos like the Dell Axim X50, which does not (officially) run Windows Mobile 6. So there's hope if you've got an older PDA or phone.

Logoease: quick and easy logo creation

Logoease
Logoease is a simple, web-based logo-creation tool that offers basic stock clip-art and fonts. You start by choosing a logo image from a general set of categories, and then you're taken to the main editing screen where you can add text and arrange your logo.

You can add up to five lines of text of various fonts and colors, and you can change options like bold, italics, and font size. Your logo picture can be colored, and objects can be layered with "send to front" or "send to back" functions.

When your logo is finished, you can download a zip file containing a .jpg, .eps, .tiff, and .png of your logo. You'll need to signup for a free account (surprise) to be able to download the logo. When we first tested the site, we got errors when attempting to save our logos; however, the site appears to work properly now.

Supercharge your file renaming tasks with WildRename

WildRename
While Windows lets you rename multiple files at once by selecting a group of documents with your mouse and clicking rename, you don't have a lot of control over the process. What if you want each file to keep its original name, but you want to add a prefix. Or what if you want to change all of the characters from upper case to lower case? Windows doesn't give you that option, but the free Windows utility WildRename does.

WildRename comes in a small, executable package, meaning you there's nothing to install on your PC, and you can even run the application from a USB flash drive. Once it's up and running you can navigate to the directory of your choice and select from a list of possible actions to perform, including:
  • Changing the case
  • Add or remove characters
  • Replace strings of characters
  • Add text counters to a series, such as _001
There's also a handy simulation mode which lets you preview the changes before writing them to your actual documents.

FLV.to saves YouTube videos as MP3 files

FLVto

There are two things that make FLV.To absolutel amazing. The first is the sheer number of Google AdSense and referral ads that the developer managed to cram into a small space. But we're willing to overlook that because the other remarkable thing about FLV.To is how easy the site makes it to save YouTube videos as MP3 files.

No, you're not going crazy. YouTube deals in videos, and MP3 files are audio only. But there's a huge number of music videos on YouTube, and FLV.To will let you save the audio from those videos in a matter of seconds. Just pop in the URL of any YouTube video and the site will proces the file and spit out an MP3 which you can download and listen to. If you've already gone through the process of downloading YouTube videos as FLV files, you can also upload Flash videos from your desktop for easy conversion.

Send free faxes online with Drop.io

Drop.io fax

We rarely run into situations where we absolutely have to send a fax these days. Most of the time, a PDF will do. But if you need to send a document to someone whose only means of communication with the outside world is a fax machine, you can still sign and send the contract necessary to help that nice Nigerian fellow's funds out of the bank account they're stuck in.

Drop.io is a file sharing service that we've covered in the past. The service provides you with a unique URL that you can share with friends and colleagues so that anyone can upload and share documents. Drop.io recently added the ability to send uploaded documents via fax. You can send Word, Excel, and PDF files to any fax number. The only limitation is that files cannot be more than 20 pages long, which is a vast improvement over other free online fax services like FaxZero, which will charge $1.99 per page for any document longer than three pages.

Best of all, you don't even need to sign up for a drop.io account to send a fax. Just visit the main page, upload your document, and click send on the subsequent page.

USB AutoRunner launches apps or documents when you plug in a flash drive

USB AutoRunner

Have a program on your USB flash drive that you want to launch every time you plug that drive in? USB AutoRunner is a little utility that will create an Autorun.inf file on your flash drive to let Windows know you want to run your portable web browser, office application, virus scanner, or any other applications installed on your flash drive.

You can also use USB AutoRunner to select documents that will be opened when you insert your flash drive. Your PC will open those documents using the default viewers. So if you've got a PDF that you want to launch, it will open up in Adobe Reader, FoxIt, or whatever PDF viewer is installed on your system.

You could create Autorun.inf files by hand, but USB AutoRunner makes the process much simpler.

Chronotron- Today's Time Waster

Chronotron is a trippy puzzle-solving game where your player's movements are recorded and then repeated when you warp back in time. It may sound confusing, but play a level or two and you'll quickly understand.

Basically you move around the level and carry out a set of actions that should ultimately help you collect the circuit board required to "skip" to the next level. The problem is, those actions won't be enough on their own, so you'll have to warp back in time. When you go back in time, your previous movements are replayed, but you can also move independently of those movements to work in tandem with yourself (or multiples of yourself).

For instance, in the first level there is an elevator that you must use to get to the circuit board. You cannot jump high enough to reach it, and the switch that operates the elevator is too far away from it for you to use it effectively. So, you move your player onto the switch and wait a few seconds, then you move to the time warp. You'll warp back in time to see your first player moving to jump on the switch while you move your "new" player to the elevator to lift you to get the board. Then you can go back to the time warp and move to the next level.

If you you mess up your early actions, you can restart the level. There are 35 levels to keep you busy, and the last 7 are labeled "impossible." We haven't made it that far, but we fear that the amount of time warping that must be necessary in those final levels may cause a black hole.
